I’m looking to get a really nice dank character in the background of my otherwise fruity iPas. I’ve had a local IPA called citrapollo which is appropriately named considering it uses citra and Apollo. The balance between the dank and citrus is perfect so Id like to make something similar. My question is does anyone have any experience or suggestions on how to get that dank/weedy kind of character from the Apollo without overdoing it and ruining the beer? I’ve read a lot about Apollo and some seem to love it while some seem to hate it. I know for sure I like it but I’m not sure exactly how much to use and when to incorporate it.

Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

Apollo has some serious kick to it. I use a modest amount of Apollo in one of my neipa recipes - along with Columbus, Amarillo, Chinook and Galaxy. Hop schedule for a 10 gallon batch is as follows:

1oz Columbus at 60
1oz each Apollo, Amarillo, Chinook, Galaxy at 5
2oz each Amarillo, Chinook, Galaxy, WP @160°F for 20 minutes then leave in while chilling to pitch temperature.
2oz each Amarillo, Chinook, Galaxy, dry hop 2 days post-pitch for 3 days, then...
2oz each Amarillo, Chinook, Galaxy, dry hop 4 days, then cold crash and keg.

Clearly a bit player, but its contribution is definitely there. I might double it, but wouldn't go much further...

Cheers!

So you’re only using the equivalent of .5 oz in a 5 gallon batch and it’s still prevalent? Wow. I know it’s strong but have never used it before. I definitely want to get that dank aroma so I was thinking of using a bit more. Something like:

.5 oz warrior at 60
1 oz Apollo at 10
1 oz Apollo at 5
1.5 oz Apollo at 170 whirlpool
2 oz Citra at 170 whirlpool
6 oz Citra dry hop
.5 oz Apollo dry hop

This isn’t that far off from the trillium street series beers except this is using Apollo instead of Columbus.

Thoughts?

Here is a link to the beer I mentioned above. In the description they claim to use both Citra and Apollo in the whirlpool and then DDH with both of them. I’d have to imagine they’re using more Citra than Apollo, but there is definitely a strong, strong dank character.

Well, it's beyond my experience to use much more, but then again, CTZ is pretty stiff stuff as well when used late, so I reckon subbing Apollo for it would likely work :)

Cheers!

I love Apollo, I haven’t used it much recently but it brings a beautiful orange pith with some dankness. If you have a NEIPA recipe where you use a good deal of Columbus, just switch out the Columbus for Apollo.

My best Apollo combo was Citra, Amarillo, Apollo 1:2:2
