I’m doing a starter for 1.070 Rosemary Pale Ale I was planning on brewing New Year’s Day. Picked up my grains and yeast yesterday and LHBS only had WLP080 which is a cream ale yeast. He gave me $2 off because it’s recommend by date was June. Yeast is 6!months old.

Got home and whipped up a starter. I believe BS calculated this yeast had a viability of 45% due to the age. Should I let this go for 48hrs on the stir plate rather than 24?

What size starter? Can you step it up? I would try to pitch your resulting starter at high krausen

BS starter calculator gave me 1.46l using 4.93 oz DME. How do I know if I should make a step up starter?

I have never seen one look quite like this? Does this look normal? This is 9 hours after pitching.
Looks like a cold break.
