We moved into this house recently and we are on septic. I would just put my trub in the garden but it is winter and will all the snow, there really is no place to put it sans just filling up a bucket. So I just dumped it all down the drain into the septic system. I figured the worst is the septic beasties get a little high nutrition snack.

Is that bad?

I've heard people recommend putting brewers or bakers yeast down the drain. They claim it helps. Certainly shouldn't hurt.

Trub and yeast seems ok. I wonder about putting star san into my septic personally. I figure it is ok since it is never more than an ounce in 5 gallons, but I still wonder.

Sanitizer is worse for it than excess nutrient. Too much sanitizer and you risk an upset (killing off too many "bugs"). The two things I'd consider:

1. Is the trub big enough to clog the drain? It probably isn't, but it's worth considering.
2. The drain only drains so fast. When the snow starts melting, I'd be careful how much water goes down the drain, at least until you get more familiar with how much capacity your system has.

Starsan is perfectly safe for your septic system. There was a a Brewing Network show with one of the guys from 5 star.
