Came home and the krausen had pushed the tinfoil off my starter in an E flask. Krausen has since fallen so I put the flask in the fridge and will decant. Would you be worried?

This was a two vial starter and I'd hate to toss $13

Nope, don't worry, enough co2 is pushing out, nothing will get in, simply sanitize the foil again and cover it back up loose again.

Thanks for the positivity duboman. I wished I shared your confidence. It was pretty much done when I got home, not a lot of obvious off gassing of CO2. It was right under a cupboard and nobody was home all day swirling dust around. I'm nervous nonetheless

I still wouldn't worry about it, it's happened to me before and my beers have all turned out fine, there is still a layer of co2 sitting on the liquid to protect it.

Last week my foil didnt fall off the flask but it was pushed up a couple inches. I just racked the beer this morning and it looks/smells/tastes great!

If ever there was a time for RDWHAHB, this is it. The yeast in that starter are outcompeting everything else.

This has happened to me a few times. I've woken up in the morning to find my foam stopper pushed up and out of my erlenmeyer flask. Maybe just a few millimeters of a gap where bugs could get in.

Great to know that this isn't a big deal! As duboman knows, I've been dealing with a slight sanitation issue. I was going to throw away all of my stored yeast just to be safe. Now I'm reconsidering.

Not to highjack this thread, but my wife literally just called to tell me that this happened to my starter again. It was fine before I left for work a few hours ago.

Is putting loose fitting tin foil over these better than using foam stoppers? It might just be a coincidence, but it seems to happen more often, the older / more used the foam stopper is. Maybe the pores in the foam slowly get clogged?

Just have her toss a piece of sanitized foil loose over the top, it's okay to taper the sides of the foil down but not tight, all will be fine!
