There's a dark beer-only competition coming up next month, so today I'm doing my version of Moose Drool. I say my version because I didn't have any black patent, and was short on crystal 80; so I used a bit more chocolate malt instead. Also trying something different with the mash; my last few dark beers have turned out somewhat bland and watery (I usually do full volume BIAB). So this time I only struck with half the water, let that mash for 60 minutes, then will add the rest as a sparge here in a bit and let it recirculate to get it all mixed up. Not really hoping for higher gravity (well, kinda) but more body and flavor than previous brews. Also, it's fun to try new things.

Brewed a blonde ale with oatmeal, just to try something a little different and use up some leftover grains. BIAB.

Mostly pilsner, a couple pounds of MO, a little honey malt, a pound of flaked oats, and a bit of acid malt for pH adjustment.

Centennial for bittering and late boil, pitched US-05.

When cleaning up I noticed the bag of oats sitting there in the bucket. Yup, I forgot to add it to the mash.

Funny, I hit my volume and OG numbers, so better than expected efficiency.

Guess it'll just be a regular blonde ale.

I’ve forgotten to add some adjuncts or misc additions in a batch or two. 🤫 Nothing wrong with a more conventional blonde ale. 🍻

Picked up some Goodbelly today - planning on a small batch of kettle sour this weekend and putting in a MoreBeer order for upcoming brews for the next few months.

I started heating the strike water for a batch of PA just before 6pm. A good bit later than I prefer to get started but it’s been that kind of week. If all goes well I should have it wrapped up for the night by 11pm 🍻

First brew on my new Brewzilla Gen 4 for me today! Doing an American Amber using locally grown and locally floor malted two-row, some crystal 40 and crystal 80, a bit of Carafa I, and Warrior, Cascade, and Centennial hops. Looking forward to getting the first go on the Brewzilla under my belt.

Brewed the Margarita Lime Gose recipe from Apt Brewer, reducing salt to 200ppm and doubling the orange. Used zest instead of peel. Wort was tasty. Philly Sour shows some low krausen and CO2 production at 24H. I hope that doesn't mean the lactic acid phase was too short.

My first time with an overnight mash. No recirculation, but I held the temp at 149F instead of letting it drop.

I'm still dialing in my equipment profile and had to leave more than 0.5G out of the FV. I need to go back this week and make adjustments based on my volume measurements throughout the process.

I started a gluten free Chinook /sorghum smash. I’ll let it cool overnight, and put it in the fermenter tomorrow morning.
Hah, brewed and put in the fermenter. Yesterday we were getting my CO2 bottle exchanged, and my wife saw a Kombucha kit. I couldn't say no, so she started a batch with tea I bought for her birthday from the RenFaire and a new scoby, and we are enjoying fresh pickles my son got started three weeks ago.

Seems DIY might run in the fam.
