Yesterday afternoon, met our friends Chris and Shelley at Rock Bottom in downtown Chicago. They have a standing Friday happy hour date there, they bought some kind of coupon book for discounted appetizers and beer which makes it a really cheap date. I had the Octoberfest which was good - a little more bitter (and balanced) than the style calls for, perhaps, but really enjoyable. Also had a barrel-aged Scottish ale that was well done. I don't know the brewer there - I'm friends with the brewer at Rock Bottom Orland Park, Iain Wilson, who is a great brewer. I seldom go to chains like Rock Bottom, but this reminded me that the beer can be quite good and and it can be a fun time.

When I used to work in downtown Mpls, I would sometimes head to Rock Bottom for a beer after work. I thought their beers were a mixed-bag, though there were a few that stood out. It's been a few years. Maybe I should give them another shot next time I'm in the area.

I'll look for that Scottish ale. I also enjoy a good Oktoberfest, but I like them true-to-form. Too many micros hop them up and they lose that delicate malt character.

Do you guys happen to have a killer recipe for Oktoberfest beer that you could post??/ Thanks
