make fun if you want, i was given the ingredients to make a free brew therefore i didnt lose anything by doing this. Anyways.. i made my own version of the highly debated " Black IPA " or " Cascadian Dark Ale " or whatever you wanna call it. I had a little too much to drink later in the week and was watching a video about adding fermentables to the fermenter during high krausen and i decided it would be an alright idea to add 1/4 bottle of mrs buttersworth maple syrup. Now, about five days later i went out to check it tis morning and it appeared to have a layer of fat or oils on the top of the beer. co2 was still escaping and it formed bubbles all over the place. it was the wildest thing ive seen yet in homebrewing. The bubbles looked like if you blew a bubble with some gum. i have pictures of the bubbles and after i popped them. after they were popped it appeared to just be yeast with little white specks. not moldy tho. very confused. i was going to dry hop it today but i dont wanna waste my hops if its bad beer. let me know. thanks

Taste it! :) If it tastes like it needs a dry hopping do it, if it tastes like crap well.... there is your answer heh

Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think Mrs. Butterworths has any real maple syrup in it. It's just high fructose corn syrup with flavoring and tons of preservatives.

^ exactly. it was a stupid thing to do but hey, gotta try something crazy every now and then right. but do think its infected? or going to be all oily? im just asking about the wierd ass bubbles on top.

or going to make me sick or something

I doubt its infected, and if it is, it probably wont hurt.

I would taste it!

"Ingredients in Mrs. Butterworth’s Thick & Rich syrup: High fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, water, salt, cellulose gum, molasses, potassium sorbate (preservative), sodium hexametaphosphate, citric acid, caramel color, natural and artificial flavors."

That cellulose gum might be the double secret beer bubble ingredient :D

Cheers!

(Mmmmm! Sodium Hexametaphosphate! ;)

Experimenting is half the fun. Do you have any pictures of the bubbles? I would have to suggest getting real ingredients also when throwing stuff in beer.

@that one guy I do have pics. ill post them in the morning ( i live in CA,US ) its midnight n im a little buzzed haha. and i know i know aha, real pure ingredients are the way to go. this is the first time ive gone out on a limb like this. from reading and experimenting its REALLY hard to ruin a batch of brew. so i figured, hmm. mrs buttersworth Black IPA, sounds fun and really out there. haha i probly wont share it but should be interesting. especially with the thought of the cellulose gum causing them funky bubbles.

Let me know what ya think. haha this is crazy lookin

so seeing as how i am in a zone of deep thought on fermentation what exactly is a lacto infection? i cant find anything online?

Due a search for lactobacillus. It makes beer kind of tart tasting. Also, post those photos in the pellicle photo collection thread. They are awesome.

That's not lactobacillus. Lacto looks like wax floating on the surface.

That's a pellicle

This is a good thread of infections. You should actually put the pictures there because they are awesome.

Rule of thumb is taste it. If it's good keg it and drink it fast. If not dump it.

Beware of bottling you my get bombs and you could permanently contaminate anything plastic it touches.

Cheers

Posted the pic in the pellicle collection, dont wanna flood the forum and post it all over the place ya know. So should i be worried about contamination of my glass carboy? it got a stuck fermentation and all kinds of issues so i just dumped it yesterday. i cleaned the carboy real good with PBW and just plain water, took a little extra care in sanitizing and i brewed up a dopplebock and put it in the carboy. should i be worried about this batch getting infected?

Perhaps next time try adding Maple syrup ( real syrup costs about $12/pint) at the end of the boi9l if you're looking for maple flavor. Not sure if the flavor would srvive, but it'd be fun to try. Just be sure to pastuerize first.

alright i should be good then. i did taste it. it wasnt terrible but it wasnt worth keeping either. Very bitter and roasty with a STRONG tounge curling sour, it didnt last but it made the drink very unpleasent. If was a lighter type ale i may have saved it and it may have been good. but not for the CDA

If you decide to go the Mrs. Butterworth's route again, I would suggest using a brand new unopened bottle. When you poured it in the first time, was it from a bottle you had been using for pancakes, where you or your kids are licking the nozzle?
