I agree. With the sorbate in there I doubt it was the maple syrup that caused the infection unless it had been used. If the infection was not from the syrup you should take a hard look at your soft plastic equipment.
 
But let it be known i ALWAYS use real ingredients when i brew. I will NEVER use mrs buttersworth again. this was a spur of the moment experiment and it was terrible. May brew a CDA and incorporate real maple syrup. That would be more of a strong ale or somethin but ya get the point :)
