If you want to be pedantic that's actually on the ice, that place is just by the shore-line.
If you were to drive straight out you would eventually end up in Finland as it's only a few dozen miles over.

On that note…. My parents smoked like chimneys in the car …windows rolled up…. AC on… we smelled like an ash tray.. but it’s a damm good thing we had an electric stove. A gas stove would have surely killed us …..

I don't remember anyone in my parents' circle that didn't smoke pretty much anywhere.
Cars? Hell's yes! Hotel room? Sure, why not? Airplanes? You betcha!
Heck, Eastern Airlines had a smoking lounge in the tail section of their Constellations...
