2024 shall finally be the year of the cross-over from magnetics to solid state on-line media for mainstream use.
If you buy a new anything other than an off-line backup device (eg: a NAS) it definitely should have nothing but SSDs inside.
Even for a local backup device...

Cheers!

I guess that explains this.

But if I don't hear the gentle whir of a 5400rpm HDD spinning up, how do I even know my computer is thinking about something?
pretty soon we won't have to hook up the front panel HDD indicator lights, which take up the space where the DVD used to go, which took up the space where the CD used to go, which took up the space where the compact flash/sd card reader used to go, which took up the space where the floppy (first 3-1/2 and before that the 5-1/4) used to go.

"HDD indicator lights"...a quaint concept that takes space away from even more front USB ports!

The only indicator my new system has is a lit power button. No DVD or BD, either. I have a slim portable for that if ever needed, which since I built this thing has only been used to make a recovery disc. And even that was a duplicate of a bootable USB stick which I'd much more likely use first...

Cheers!

I read this and then had a few beers so I could meet the criteria to respond in this thread.... I've been out of the tech loop for 10 years now because of the brain injury, but here you're touching on a subject that was of utmost importance to me in my old life from which I stll have shelves full of hard drives and DVD-R's containing years of other peoples projects that I worked on and maintain Fire-Copies for...
Are SSD's finally rated reliable for archival purposes?

Are SSD's finally rated reliable for archival purposes?

I would not rely on off-line SSDs for archival purposes, but for on-line backup usage they're good to go. I use a 6Gb SATA SSD in my new system as its primary backup device, but I use a Synology NAS box with mirrored WD Red magnetic drives for automatic archiving...

Cheers!

one of my all-time favorite movie lines. Rocky is a judges' decision away from the heavyweight title, beat up, bloody, he doesn't want to be interviewed, he doesn't want a rematch, he's just looking for his girlfriend.

first thing he says to her? not "I love you" or "let's GTFOH" it's...

"where's your hat?"

While at the block party tonight, I spent considerable time watching all the interactions of the children there and came up with a few conclusions:
1. Why am I putting money away into a 529 account?
2. OMG! We have some Really ugly kids int the neighborhood!

That is all...

Moving the sentence I posted last night to where it belongs. To prove it belongs in the drunken thoughts thread, I originally posted it in the wine making thread.🤔

If I had known about apple juice and bread yeast back in the late 60s and early 70s in my dry county in MS, I could probably have made more money than I did bootlegging booze from wet counties.
