Eh, plenty of people were double-dipping and grabbing extra tickets at Captain Lawrence back in 2009. I don't think it's anything new, but as craft grows (and demand continues to outstrip supply, fueling the secondary market) there will certainly be more people doing it. I do really like it when a brewer actually takes real, workable steps to prevent behavior they dislike rather than just hoping for the best, though (or even better, actually charging fair market value for offsite sales...).

Yup, Troy Casey is doing this...if you sell his beer on secondary, no tickets for future releases for you. Love it.

Will anyone be mad when, like tobacco, in 50 years, all of our favorite brands will be owned by two companies... with some hipsters on the side still running small businesses that are extremely local, refusing to sell out?

Isn't that kind of now? Or at least 20 years ago?

New Glarus was scanning ID's this weekend for the same reason, because beer folks have a tendency towards shitheaded behavior as kindly asking patrons to adhere to a "daily limit" wasn't working with folks trying to game the system.

It's a sad reminder of where this hobby has gone in recent years.
And at least one of the guys at our friend's table got up at least once to see if they were still scanning IDs. I didn't laugh in his face, so there's that.

I think unlike the brewery consolidation of the past, we're likely to see a slightly different consolidation this time around. I imagine something along the lines of:

- Two companies own 50% of the beer marketshare.
- Five companies own the next 40%.
- Several thousand companies own the final 10%.

We're already seeing consolidation from AB that would easily slot them into the first category, and acquisitions by companies that are unlikely themselves to ever be acquired (Duvel, San Miguel, Constellation) that fit into the second category. I think we may see another merger from MolsonCoors before all is said and done (perhaps with Heineken) that would likely slot them in as the second company in the first group.

And then you have thousands of smaller breweries that will act like restaurants - some will refuse to sell out, some will go out of business as others enter the market, some will sell out, but lose marketshare to other newcomers. I don't foresee the kind of serious consolidation that would wipe out this market (neighborhood brewpubs, small regional breweries, etc.) without a black swan event like Prohibition, which, hopefully, will never reoccur because America still hasn't fully recovered from that debacle.

As long as I can homebrew I'm fine with it.

Some people need to ******* relax about beer. I'm in line at Veil and some guy is giving me **** because I dropped my friend (who has gout) off at the back of the line, went around the corner to park, and joined him in line with a chair for him to sit in. Like I was gone literally 5 minutes and a few people that joined the line in between are complaining. If I was really cutting the line it wouldn't be to save a dozen spots with a hundred people still in front of me.

Apparently what I should have done was put my flashers on, jumped out, loudly announced I was in line and plopped my chair down, then jumped back in the car to park. Beside that somehow makes a huge difference to these people.

Not even gout can stop beer nerds from waiting in line for beer.

You just drove 4+ hours with a friend (who has gout) to grab a few four packs of sugar water, and Richmond locals are the ones who need to chill... lol...ok.

I'm kinda just kidding...but you do realize who silly this sounds, right?

And to hang out with some friends. And get some homebrew supplies I can't get locally or anywhere within 2 hours. And eat some softshell crab.

And I am chill, just perplexed someone would flip out over something so minor.

Was a sweet burn, until you added the J/K disclaimer.

I agree it's some minor **** to get angry about. Have fun at the release and make the dude with gout give you most of his beers. He really shouldn't be drinking that much anyway...

He sacrifices a lot of things that are precursors but won't cut out beer. When you're the owner of a brewery I guess I can't blame him. ;)

No red meat for him at dinner though...

I mean, you did jump in line. I can understand why people might get pissed. I don't think this is something only beer people would be upset by. Your friend didn't have to get in line. I usually can't stand **** that goes down at bottle releases, but it seems you're in the wrong here.

I don't do bottle releases, so no dog in the fight. I'm only saying I think it's perfectly reasonable for someone to be upset by a person jumping in line, especially if the reason for the queue is to purchase a limited product.

People are wandering in and out of line to get pours of beer (including the guy that caused a scene), get stuff from their cars, talk to people, etc. If your standard is "you have to stay in your position in line the entire time or your forfeit it, no holding or saving" then yeah would agree. But that's not what's been going on.

Also homeboy looked like he was about to come and complain at a friend of mine at one point who came to chat with us for the same thing...until said friend left to go back to his spot in the first 10 in the line.
