A home-brew oddapter makes, and then...nothing comes to mind that's both black and an IPA -- Alpine Ugly is a great beer, but you can't taste any contribution from the dark malts.
I should also note that Lagunitas Nighttime kind of just tastes like a Lagunitas DIPA but colored black. No dark malt character. I think one of the reasons it is rare to see both elements combined well is because 1. they clash and 2. people think you can either just use dehusked malts for color, or that you don't need as many hops because it's not fully an ipa.

Totally agreed. You need a perfect match. Strangely, I've found Citra goes really well with dark malt. No idea why.

I love Surly Blakkr, thats probably just me though.

I also love The Alchemist's Beelzebub, Citra stout with the perfect roast grapefruit character.

I actually have a double black IPA recipe I've been wanting to make, but every time I think about getting the ingredients for it I think it might be a waste of time and money cause so many black IPAs out there fall flat.

I love Mountain Standard from Odell. Always buy up a bunch when it's in season.
this was going to be my answer too, but then I remembered I haven't had any in about 3 years so maybe I won't like it now as much as I remember. I wish we had Odell here, damnit. ISO now I guess

I have a few accounts that have it on draft and I agree it is tasty, luckily my job basically requires me to drink copious amounts of it on occasion. I just wish it were year round.

Spent the afternoon in Wellington (nz). For a small city the beer scene is ridiculous.

I think my girlfriend and I are going to move here just to tick beers.

Love the help wanted ads where homebrewers have started breweries, realize they have no idea what they're doing, and are looking for professionals far more qualified than themselves to save them.

I'd say this is 75% of all newly opened breweries in this country are homebrewers that just aren't ready to brew on a commercial scale. Many don't even adjust their water. Out of the ones that do, a lot just put 5.2 stabilizer in it. They start brewing, realize their beer won't sell, then they have to hire a real brewer.

Granted I'm sort of generalizing, but three breweries in my area that have opened in the past two years have had to hire pro brewers with experience to take over.

The two new breweries (of the now three total) in my town are owned by investors but also long time home brewers who had to hire professionals to come in and brew their beers.
Have been open for awhile now and have yet to go to either of them.
