First couple I had tasted like they had pennies soaked in them or were too sweet but the Imperial Cupcake thing was tasty (as pastry stouts go).

This. Those horrible NEIPAs have become ubiquitous. So many spicy, slimy, yeasty messes.
ridiculously sweet and one dimensional. Legit tasted like this beer wasn't finished fermenting... save yourself the $300 and drop a shot of vodka into some yoohoo or something.

Local brewery is doing an artisan bread and beer pairing. 5 breads with 5 beers for $40.

How did we get here?
You think that's bad?

****. You can't get into any beer/food thing in Austin for less than $60/person.

Independence Brewing just had one for $65/pp that included family-style fried chicken and a few beers....

Jester King just had one that was $100.00 per person (granted that was six course meal).

I keep having to ask myself who has the money to blow on a $200.00 dinner for two when it's not a special occasion like a birthday or anniversary....

<--- Not this guy.

I need to work on that whole "being born independently wealthy" thing more.

It's bread. Just bread.

It's bread. Just bread.
Local bread place here (that recently worked with Jester King, actually for Kvass) sells 6 loaves of bread to you for $72.

http://www.michebread.com/order

They don't even ship it to you for that much. You need to pick it up at specific times at specific places or you just miss a loaf. No refunds.

News flash: artisan bread is just as dumb as "craft" beer.

Side note: some are terribly sweet, too sweet even for a midwest pour.

On the topic of Angry Chair: I usually hate sweet stouts but the German Chocolate Cupcake was fantastic when I had it two years ago. Happily drank the whole 32oz I got. I believe it used to be lower ABV then, can you confirm liquiddegenerate ?

I haven't had anything else since then so I can't comment on the new stuff.

finally tried one of these Angry Chair stouts last night... THIS is what everyones jizzing their pants over? Not a drainpour but certainly tough to finish. Jesus.

While I do think they're overhyped, I have enjoyed everything I've tried from them to varying degrees. The problem is that much like the Bruery, their sweet stuff is so incredibly sweet that you need to split it several ways, because what's super enjoyable in a 5 oz pour doesn't translate into a 25 oz serving.

The first draft batches were only 5.6% or so and delicious.

Random thought: Pretty crazy to see how vigilant some people get online for something like backing out of a trade. I have 100% perfect trading etiquette but I'm seeing people just get roasted to all hell for all kinds of stuff. The lynch mob mentality in some of these groups isn't even what amazes me, its the need for random people to get involved and become the beer police. Now I am very involved at policing a line for a release or something, but people spend hours and hours just bashing some stranger online for backing out of a trade that hasn't been shipped yet. In some cases it gets to the point of family members of the accused being harassed, etc.. What does everyone think about this? Seems like some people have such a strong passion for being beer police. Its not the fact they are called out, or that I have a problem with that. Its just kind of odd to me how far people go with this stuff....just an outlet to hate or bully someone to relieve their own stress or something. Lynch-mob mentality. Before anyone asks, no I don't have any friends that have been involved in this kind of thing and have no horse in the race, just looking to see what everyone's opinions are.

I still really enjoy beer, going to breweries, sharing beers with friends, going to the occasional releases (Wooden Hell 2.0 last month was particularly fun as a lot of old faces were around for the afternoon), but I've fallen out of trading / BIF's almost completely.

Lots of reasons I'm sure, but the "culture" around trading these days just seems awful. Between razzles, the insanity of the secondary market, and the online trading forums (outside of here for the most part) it just isn't as much fun as it once was.

I hope you are getting full pours and they have some kind of amazing charcuterie platter to go with the bread. And this comes from a dude who used to work at an Italian bread bakery and Respects Bread.

Roman Meal is good enough for me.

Remember that brewery I spoke about that's had their grand opening and then closed for a few weeks due to low inventory? Well, they closed, again, for the same reason. Wat.

This happened to a local spot here after their opening weekend in April, leaving them down for 2 weeks of business directly after opening doors. In central CT, TreeHouse, Lawson's and Nebco dating back to the Fuzzy Baby Ducks days, combined with proximity to VT and MA have created such a blanketing frenzy over IPAs that nowhere really stands a chance to keep anything in stock if the feeding frenzy hits. It's pretty silly.

Eh, having a nice meal once a month or every other month is something I'm more than willing to budget for. Though $200 out the door on a nice meal is steal. Got reservations for a tasting menu in Aug that's going to be an easy $1k after drinks for the two of us. Will totally be worth it.
