Afternoon guys..

I've just made 2 x 2L starters with a Bavarian lager and American Lager..

they are in flasks right now waiting for brewery tomorrow..

I'm wondering... i have 20 viles of slants ready for yeast waiting... can i decant off all the old wort and stick a sterilized hook down into the yeast cake of each and wipe them on the slants ?

will this work ? or is it best to do it with just a fluid smack pack.. or the 2L flasks in suspension.

I'm in the same boat. I just grew up a 4 liter starter of Belgian yeast I want to plate. I was thinking of decanting the spent wort and pulling about 25ml of the slurry and using that to plate and slant. Interested in any answers that you get.

on a side note not to hijack my own thread but do you have a 4 liter flask ? is that how you stepped up to 4L

How is 2L to 2L stepping up? Did you pitch a portion into a second vessel?

1L to 2L would have allowed you to increase from 200B to 400B cells. 2L to 2L would have given you no increase at all.

If its not to late, I'd have no problem grabbing a sterile loop and making 5 or so slants from each the American and Bavarian. Just look at the slants in a week or so and see if they are clean - so fuzzy weird growth. You should be good.

What do you mean not to late ? When is it to late to grab the yeast ? Besides after pitching the yeast Into the wort lol

Cold crashing the 2ltr and decanting all the spent wort and adding 2ltrs of fresh starter wort should increase the cell count from 407.9B to 540B. So yes, in a sense it is a minimal amount of additional growth, as opposed to a 2ltr to 4ltr starter, but I was only in need of 490B cells for my pitch and the remainder was to plate and store. :mug:
