My advice, go buy a bunch of growlers from your local micro and use them. You can get a stopper that fits in them, they're glass, and they offer some light protection.
 
I have used 2 litre plastic jugs for primary fermentation, but that was because it was the container that the juice came in (cider) and the airlock fit nicely, and all my other growlers were full.

CVille Kevin uses plastic jugs as one time, recyclable fermenters for test batches of cider, but they come from the press with the cider in them, so I assume they're new.
