So I started brewing a batch of Winter Porter last night. I made a starter and pitched my yeast when temperatures hit 75 degrees. The problem is when I woke up this morning about 12 hours after pitching the yeast I woke up to find my air lock filled with krausen. I don't have a blow off tube and will be gone for the day. Is there anything I can do to minimize my clean up and prevent a carboy bomb?

And I am brewing a 5 gallon batch in a 6 gallon class carboy.

do you have an old piece of tubing that will fit over the inner tube on the airlock? that in essence is all a blow-off line is when its stuck into a vessel filled partway with sani.

if this is undoable then your best bet is to put the carboy into the bathtub, pull the airlock off and cover the top with a clean towel while your away. no this will not let crap into your beer either since the towel will prevent things from falling in and the off-gassing will keep microbes out of the top as well.
