Hi all

Recently i have decided to brew a ipa from coopers, and i dont know if taste of kit itself is good and hoppy enough to yo leave it as it is or dry hopping it with 100g of cascade hops i have in my freezer. My point is, this is my third brew so i dont want to mess it up by dry-hopping a kit that doesnt need it.

its still fermenting at ~19Litres, OG: 13BLG (1.053), using us-05 yeasts

Do the instructions say to dry hop? I'd say yes adding 100gm to an IPA won't hurt it.

Welcome to HBT.

Right. When you start adding bittering hops, that's when you can potentially mess up the balance. Dry hops just add aroma, so no harm there.

That said, I did a Coopers IPA years ago when, stupid me, I don't think I realized it was hopped and I added an oz of Cascade for 60 min. Beer was delicious!

Mayki said it's still fermenting. Keep in mind you should dry hop after most of the fermentation is complete. I believe the CO2 during active fermentation will drive off any aromas you expected from dry hopping when doing so too early.

IPA's are always better when you dry hop. I ferment for 14 days. When i brew an ipa i usually dry hop with an ounce or two.(depending on the hop im using, & the flavor im looking for.) I add the hops on day 8 or 9 of fermentation. I don't recommend dry hopping for more that 7 days, or you will get a grassy flavor in the beer. Welcome to the forum.

If I did a coopers kit now, or even one of the Ambers or Red Ales extract kits I like, then I'd be tempted to heat it in a few gallons of water to 160 and let some citra, cascade or centennial hops do their thing for maybe 10-15 minutes. I bet the result would be decent. Not sure what the deal is with heating them extract kits is now, but if you can, worth a go. Do no harm at all to dry hop. I dry hopped a Muntons IPA kit with 15 grams / 1 oz of cascade and result was very good.

Wondering what became of this brew. Mayki did you dry hop? How much and did it turn out?

I just did a Cooper’s IPA that I used 12 grams of dry hops in the primary. Then brewed a hop tea that I added to secondary and let it sit for 48hrs before bottling. Taste tested on bottling day and had a definite hop boost.
