I’m in a discord group with a few competitive homebrewers, it’s kinda like an online hb club we all more or less have connections with breweries contracted or that buy from Freestyle. So we do a group buy and then someone will packaged them up and ship them out.

I currently have/will have by next week Nelson, Rakau, and Motueka.
That’s rad.

I'm in need of peacharine 😌

I haven't heard of Treehouse talked about as much as they were back in the day, but I got caught up in their new YouTube marketing storm.

They're doing some kind of brewer vs brewer in house thing they've apparently done before. The challenge is to brew a single IPA without Citra. One thing I thought was really strange and interesting was around 5:50 in the video Nate looks at one of the team's recipe and says that it contains 1 base malt and 6 specialty malts.

What the hell are these guys doing? They later say this beer is around a 5 SRM orangey-colored IPA. Seems insanely overcomplicated, like reading an HBT recipe from 2010.

Goldings and more Goldings, followed by a year out in the yard in a barrel made of Memel oak, obviously....

Perhaps a more interesting challenge that is also commercially relevant, is an IPA without Citra - or any hop costing more than Citra.

Obviously that restriction will fall in different ways in different markets, but taking the Malt Miller as the benchmark "full-price" retailer in the UK, that allows you things like Galaxy, Idaho7, Bru-1, Luminosa and Vic Secret, but not Nelson, Krush, Nectaron etc.

I remember when Galaxy was all the rage but was going for $40/lb at the discount hop stores, so I avoided it. Then there was a obvious decline in commercial beers made with Galaxy, so I avoided it. Now I do see that Yakima Valley Hops lists Galaxy at $15/lb, which is the same as their current price on Citra.

When in I first got into hazies in about 2019 Galaxy could not miss. It's fallen far since then

I think Galaxy is making a bit of a comeback. I've had some bad Hop Alliance bags that came out Peanutty, but I have a 2023 YVH bag that's tasting pretty pineapply. Beer is conditioning, but I'll report back soon.

Riwaka though... man it's intense. To me it always tastes like overripe passionfruit with some lime and a very pungent diesel note. At least the YVH stuff. I've had Hop Butcher beers with it that I loved though.

Bought a house on 12/31/24 and haven't been able to brew for about 4 months. Needed some plumbing done, which finally got taken care of this past Sunday, so I whipped up a starter last night. The inaugural brew is going to be my tried and true Citra/Mosaic Hazy. I have some Strata I might throw in the DH. To be determined. I just can't wait to brew again!

The 2024 Galaxy from YVH is decent. I think I don't really like predominately Galaxy beers, and admittedly I don't really remember what peak Galaxy tasted like, but the 2024 was very passionfruit forward to me, with a little dank/green onion.

can confirm the 23 galaxy is servicable. Opened the 23 and 24 bags I had on hand to figure out which to use for an IPA I was dry hopping. 24 was ok but had a hint of plastic too it. 23 didn't have that and only minimal earthiness. Still hesitant so only dropped 2oz in to a 14oz total DH but will report back.

Did my first 10 Gallon batch a couple Sundays ago.

Literally maxed out our mash tun - 39.5lb's of grain. Instead of dry hopping with 16oz of T90 Citra, I Went with half the amount and lupomax in the keg. Also decided on brew day to omit the Lactose.

Kegged it this past Sunday and kegged hopped it with 4oz each of Citra Lupomax. I'll tap it this upcoming Sunday to see how things are coming along.

Looks solid. I would say use Brewer's Crystals instead of Sugar unless you're intentionally trying to dry out your NEIPA. Would also pitch way more yeast for 10 gals @ 1.090 OG. Probably looking at 6 packets of Lallemand Verdant at minimum.

I won't specifically disagree, but - 6 packets is a LOT of yeast even in 10 gallons. 2 would do the job, 3 for insurance, 4 if you want to go nuts. But 6? Maybe so, but wow.

not really. 5 gallons of standard strength (1.048ish) would get 1 packet, 2 for anything 1.070ish, 3 for 1.080's/1.090's. 2 for 10 gallons is a massive underpitch. Especially with a big beer like that you want great yeast health otherwise it'll taste like rocket fuel, not ferment out all the way, or both. I did 6.5 gals of a WC triple IPA recently and I pitched about 4 packets worth of US-05 into it (OG 1.086) - although I do have a brick of US-05 since that's what I use for my big stouts so I don't mind being liberal with my pitch rates.

Rebrew of my gold medal winning 21C beer from NHC regionals last year. Pretty simple process
OG: 1.073
FG: 1.024
ABV 6.5
6.5 gallons into the fermenter

61.5% Pils
25.3% White Wheat
13.2% flaked oats
5.2 mash ph with lactic acid
170:85 Cl:SO4, approx 20 ppm Na 10 ppm Mg

5ibus of mosaic at 20
4oz '21 Citra T45 pellets 30 min WP at 170
20g Citra Incognito dip hop

Dropped ph to 5.0 with phosphoric.
2 packs of Verdant, fermented at 68ish (don't have a thermowell in the pressurized fermenter) for 7 days
Crashed to the 40's, DH'd off yeast in a separate purged vessel with 4oz '23 crosby citra, 4oz '23 citra cryo, 4oz '23 Freestyle Nelson, 2oz '23 YVH Galaxy for approx 36 hours agitating 3x. This is the lower end of my DH rates.

A bit green now but super expressive, citra forward with the classic character, the freestyle nelson pokes through with a bit of NZ thiol and then that galaxy musky pine/pineapple thing at the tail end.

I tend to disagree about 3 for 1.080 / 1.090, I've done 2 and 3 packs both a few times for a 1.1XX Imperial Stout I make twice a year and I'm positive there's no difference in flavor or final gravity. But do agree that I forgot how high an ABV folks take some of these beers and clearly 2 is too low, that'd be more the pale ale territory.

I ran the #'s through the Lallemand site and it rounded up to 4 of the 11g packets for 10 gallons of 1.090 beer.

I follow the ProBrewer suggested pitching rates by OG and volume on the Brewer's Friend yeast calc. I've never investigated it myself but I figure with the money spent on hops alone for these beers, I'd rather buy more yeast and overpitch if anything.

Do you do anything special with the incognito to make sure it gets into the wort effectively? Or is just dip hopping with it effective enough? Think I dipped hopped with it once and some stuck to the side of the fermentor yet

This one came out fantastic! Super happy with the the aroma and hop saturated flavor that this one has. It dropped a bit clearer than I would have hoped but I think that might be because I left the kegs outside to "cold crash" over night and carbonate and I think the low was around 20F so I'm sure it dropped out more than a temp in the 30's would have. Otherwise, super happy with it. I don't know how I've been missing out on Lupomax this whole time.

Scored a 43 with my hazy in a comp over the weekend which got me a 1st place and a best in show. Pretty happy with this beer, heavy on the nectaron, citra of course, and a little bit of superdelic I had leftover from the last batch.

Congrats man. I haven’t personally seen a hazy win best of show ever so I’m really impressed by that

Thanks brother, sounds like I get to brew it with a pro, the co- owner and head brewer of mad chef in Lancaster PA selected us to brew it with him. Excited for that to happen, I'll update that as I get details on it.

Congrats on the win. What ratio did you go with the hops? I've got some 2024 Nectaron that I want to try out.

Nice man. Idk if you’ve ever had an opportunity like that before but it’s a blast man. And as a homebrewer, it’s big bragging rights IMO.

Congrats again

2:1 nectaron:citra in the wp
2:1:1 nectaron:superdelic:citra for the dh

Next batch I wanna throw some strata at it and see how that goes.
Thanks. Did you find Nectaron totally dominated in those ratios? I did a 1:1 Citra Nectaron a few years ago and Nectaron was all that came through. Still a good beer but the citra was AWOL.

I still got the citra, this was an all t90 batch, no lupomax or cryo or hop substitute or whatever.. I mean nectaron ran the show but citra and superdelic were both present. I think it all paired well, I was worried I overdid the nectaron, when I tasted my gravity sample that was all I got and it was a bit much then once kegged and carbed and about a week of getting to it's happy place everything came together.

Edit: I typically do it the other way around, 2:1 citra:nectaron but for this batch I wanted to really bring the nectaron to the front and see what happens, also, I had more nectaron and it was kinda one of those... I'll use what I got in the freezer beers, I just threw in the superdelic cause I needed to hit my oz to gallon ratio for my dry hop and that's what I had left.

Congrats on the win - it looks great. I'm currently crashing my beer dry hopped with citra, nectaron, Nelson & superdelic. 2, 1.5, 1, 0.5 ratios. I was due to use riwaka instead of the nelson/superdelic but it was pretty garlic/onion smelling. How good is Superdelic?!

@couchsending is this you?! It's so exciting to keep watching your successes on the national stage. You've always been super knowledgeable and helpful, it's well deserved.

You beat me to it @secretlevel! Listened on my morning walk today.

Well done @couchsending was a good listen!!! I’m interested in brewing low
abv hoppy beers come summer, plan to trial many of your Lipa techniques.
