Got a new keggle MLT on the way and can't squeeze in a test run before brew day. It has a full false bottom and pick up tube. I'm not going to permanently insulate it because a RIMS tube is coming soon.

I'm doing a 10 gallon batch of IPA and assuming about 12 - 15 degree temperature loss after adding the grains (good estimate?)

Real question: Should I attempt my first step mash using a banjo burner outside in 20F weather with no pump? I'd be manually recirculating the wert while the flame is on to distribute the heat. How high should the flames be when raising the temperature? The plan is to wrap it in blankets while the heat is off.

Has anyone ever done this?

Or should I just do a single infusion mash and stay inside since my HLT and BK are electric?

Thanks!
