Strangest of places I have been to. A capital, of sorts, too. Not my photo.

In the steppes of southwestern Russia, there lies the largest Buddhist city in all of Europe, a town called Elista. In addition to giant monasteries and Buddhist sculptures, Elista is also home to kings and queens—but not in the royal sense.

Lying on the east side of Elista is Chess City, a culturally and architecturally distinct enclave in which, as the New York Times put it, “chess is king and the people are pawns.”

Found it by searching "Giant chess board next to a pagoda"

Exactly what I searched for

Seemed simple enough.

I'd like to know the search for the bridge a couple ago myself.

Looking for something to post.
Bridge picture thought process: knowing that it was a national capital limited the options considerably. The bridge seemed new and looked like in a more or
less developed country. Less likely to be in Europe, I thought, so I looked in North America first. Which limited the search to Ottawa, as there is no such bridge in DC (where I currently live). I googled “Arch bridge Ottawa. Bingo.

Elista, in the “Republic” of Kalmykia, home to City Chess and a collection of brand new Tibetan Buddhist temples, all paid for by the local kleptocrat oligarch/ruler, is truly one of the most bizarre places on earth. The “chess is king and people are pawns” quote is so appropriate.

Ran into the idea for this game on another forum unrelated to brewing and it turned out to be a lot of fun.

The rules are simple:

1. The first person to correctly guess what skyline is posted will post a photo of a skyline that they choose, once the person confirms the guess is correct.

2. There are no limitations on where the city is or the size of the city. There are people from different countries on this forum so it will make it diverse.

3. If nobody can guess for an extended period such as a few days, then the poster can give hints to keep people guessing, or just reveal the answer and let someone else post.

4. This is an honor system here so let's keep it fair and fun for everyone. No cheating by using SEARCH GOOGLE FOR IMAGE or looking at the IMAGE URL, or any other method.

I will start with this photo I took during a trip last month. It is in the U.S.

ARNOBG….you suck! - lol. You started this and now I’m gonna have another addiction since discovering!! 😖 I’ll be spending hours looking through photos when I should be doing other things.…

Cheers mate 🍻

What's going on, guys? Too easy or in need of a clue? It's in the greater metro area of a national capital of a country mentioned by someone in a fairly recent post.

Well done, @dirkomatic.

El Escorial, as it is commonly known, one of the most popular day trip attractions from Madrid. It’s a UNESCO heritage site and served as a monastery, basilica, royal palace, pantheon, library, museum, university, school, hospital and hunting lodge for the royals. 26 Bourbon and Habsburg dynasty kings and queens rest in the Pantheon of Kings.

It was certainly worth the day trip, in 2009!
