Loving Munich! I thought I’d show just a few photos.

Been there, done that...dozens of times. LOL!

The first time I went to Schloss Neuschwanstein was in 1975. (Long before the cameras and the huge ticket office downtown). I went all over the place unrestricted. I went in some rooms that were halls but the looked like they were storage warehouses...unadorned, bare, dusty, etc.

It looks like you're having a great vacation!

I love visiting Neuschwanstein, no matter how many times we took guests there it never got old, especially that view of the Alpsee. I also loved the drive from Stuttgart, just a gorgeous part of the world. It might have just been my imagination but it always seemed to me when driving through Bavaria that the sky was bluer and the grass was greener, as if someone had turned up the saturation.

I don't know where you're staying or where you're going, but north of Munich is Ingolstadt. That's where the Reinheitsgebot was signed. The Donau River is the Danube.

FWIW, Dachau is 13 miles to the northwest of Munich.

Awesome yooper, thanks for sharing. I think we ate jager schnitzel at hb haus. I love that food. Dachau was intense having relatives who died in that tragedy . Thanks for throwing that out there homebrewer 99.

We’ve moved now to Bamberg. I lived in Frankfurt in the early 80s, so have been to Stuttgart, Bergesgarten, etc, many times- but Bamberg is brand new for me. We went to Weltenburg Kolster on the Danube yesterday on the way here, and it was awesome. They claim it’s the oldest brewing monastery in the world, just as Weihenstephan does but can only prove it as early as 1003.

More photos from last night:

The owner of Schlenkerla is a friend of one our group, so he gave us a very nice private room and talked with us, and they tapped two kegs for us. He said he is the 6th generation of his family to own and brew at Schlenkerla. Schlenkerla is named for his great grandfather. We are touring the brewery this afternoon.

Ah, I can see that now. I worked in Bamberg for 5 years.

About 11 miles south you passed the exit for Buttenheim. That's where the St. Georgenbrauerei is located. Within shouting distance is where Levi Strauss was born. His house is painted faded jean blue and they have self-guided tours. I lived in the next village over, Altendorf.

Applescrap...I didn't intend to hurt anyone's feelings. I think everyone should visit these places before history is rewritten to say the Holocaust never happened. I've been to Dachau 5-6 times and also visited Buchenwald.

I hope to get a chance to go back and see all those other places someday. I hope you post some more pics yooper. Sounds like an amazing trip.

We are still in Bamberg, but going tomorrow to Pilsen and then onto Prague.

We toured the cellars at Schlenkerla, and drank out of the lagering tanks!

Then we went onto to new beer gardens and enjoyed the beautiful day.

Great pics, Yooper, thanks for sharing!

I visited the area a few times with German friends in the mid-80s. Neuschwanstein is great, and we hiked the trail up to it. There was a cool swinging foot bridge crossing the gorge on the way to the castle.

Dachau was very sobering but so important to visit. Easy S-Bahn ride from Munich.

What cool experiences. I am curious if there are fruit ipas and such or is it all traditional beers?

Thanks for sharing. My wife and I will be in Munich next week.

Do you have any favorite beer halls in Munich? I've visited the Hofbrauhaus before but that's it. We will be visiting it again as part of the tour but will also have free time for exploring the town.

I was stationed in Augsburg for 4 years (40 miles west). I can't tell you how many times I used to drive to the Hofbrauhaus for dinner and a few beers after work.

I recommend the English Garden. There's a Chinese pagoda there (and sometimes people walk naked around the park).

FWIW, it was one of the places to buy drugs back in the 70s. I remember when they raised the price for a gram of hash to $2. For shame!

If you're into technology, the Deutsches Museum is one of the top museums in Germany. I've been there several times. They have an auditorium where I saw Bob Seger, Kansas, Cheap Trick, (all separate shows) and a few others in concert. I've also been to concerts at the Olympic Stadium (Pink Floyd, Queen, ELO, etc) and a smaller venue called the Circus Krone (Peter Frampton on his Comes Alive tour in 1976, Aerosmith, Foreigner on their first world tour (and they only had 1 album out...they had to play 2 or 3 of their songs a couple of times)).

Thanks for the feedback. The last time I was in Munchen was 1987 during Oktoberfest. We found the fest to be more hype than substance. I was stationed at Hahn AB and took the trip via the AFRC at Hahn.

Munich was awesome. Myself and my wife who has never been to Munich are really looking forward to our trip. The trip is a 12 day tour of Germany. We have two days in Munich. After the trip we will spend 3 days in Zell in the the Hunsruck to see how much I can remember about getting around where I lived for 2 years 30 years ago. Lots of history everywhere in Germany.

Anyhow, we have only a few hours of free time in Munich and want to make the best of it. Thanks for the suggestions.

You're welcome. I lived in Germany 9 years total. I've been to 8 Oktoberfests (for 12 visits).

If you only have a few hours then a couple of beers (and a dozen pictures) at the HBH and back to City Hall (Rathaus) to watch the Glockenspiel show (11 a.m., 12 p.m., and 5 p.m.). There are a few places in Marienplatz where you can sit, have a beer and watch the show.

Looking at the clock, go to the left corner of the building, there is a really neat dragon (if you're into stuff like that).

When you exit the HBH turn right. Go to the next small street and there is a statue on a pedestal of Little Red Riding Hood and the wolf (if you're interested).

To the left of City Hall there is the Frauenkirche (looks like a set of salt/pepper grinders). Take the stairs up the tower for a great view and pictures.

Where else are you going? I've probably been there.

Yes here are three of the best...
Wirtshaus Ayingers - Platzl 1A (very near HBH)
Schneider Brauhaus - Tal 7
Augustiner Keller - Arnulfstraße 52
