I must be missing something. I plug in my OG and volume and it gives me the # of liters to make for my starter to acheive the proper pitching rate. But it doesn't tell me how much DME to use. Is there a standard amount of DME to use for all starters no matter the size? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, the caclculator just tells you what size of a starter you need...not how to make one. I usually stick to 3oz of DME per liter and that will put me in the low 1.030s.

According to Mr. Malty himself you want to use 1gm of DME per 10 ml of starter.

So for a 1 liter starter, you would put 100gm of DME into the vessel and then fill with water to the 1 liter mark.

Here's a link with Jamil's explaination Proper Yeast Pitching Rates

10:1 by weight whatever units you use. A pint of water is roughly a pound, so figure about 1.5 ounces of DME per pint, or 3 oz per quart.
