I am in process of assembling a Brutus 10 replica (build thread to come).

I have purchased the Brewer's Hardware heat shield /mounts for my Banjo Burner (http://www.brewershardware.com/12-Heat-Shield-Burner-Mount.html). I now need to know the best way to install these.

My stand is 1.5" 16 gauge mild steel. I have read that the 16 gauge may be too thin for tapping holes. I suppose that the shields could be welded to my stand, but I am not sure if my flux core wire welder is capable of doing that, and I am even less certain in my ability if it is in fact possible. That leads me to the next possible solution, welding a nut onto the stand. If I go that route would three bolts welded to the stand provide enough strength to support the rather heavy burner? Again, my welding skills instill little confidence in me.

Thanks for the help guys!

What about welding a piece of square tubing in the burner opening and then drilling / tapping that, just like they do on the page you linked?

I suppose that is an option, but it would require picking up some more steel which can be difficult as steel suppliers hours are very close to my work schedule.

Really, I am hoping to hear someone weigh in on welding a bolt to the frame as it would essentially take the place of the smaller tubing as seen in the above pic. Assuming the steel nut can be attached with the same strength as the tubing.

i welded very similar heat shields to my stand. If you have a gasless mig welder you will want to want to practice first and maybe get a different wire. Stainless is completely a differenet experience than welding mild steel.

Self tapping screws won't hold for long. The Steel is going to expand and contract enough to cause issues. Flux core will not work on stainless. Welding a bolt to the frame would work Drilling through and running a bolt long enough to go through the frame is another solution.
This post causes me to ponder as to how we could make our burner shroud mountable without welding.

The design of these mounts will allow for as many screws attaching the mount to the stand as I would like. As this is only a semi circle I have approximately 8 inches on each side making contact with my stand. The only area for concern would be the front that would be supported by one screw.

I bought 5/16" X 2-1/4" SST bolts and through bolted them to the top tubes of my stand.

My sheilds are circular though. Dont know if yours touch the sides.

I adjusted the location of my pot support so that there is no gap as seen in the Brewers Hardware application.
