That's actually not true. It only works on word that are short or very common, because it is so easy to unscramble the letters quickly or recognize the scrambled words easily.

Unless you know the preamble well, you'll have a hard time reading this, and you'll have to stop at a few words to unscramble them:

Yeah, but some words can really throw off some sentences. For example, with 'than' and 'then', it can give a sentence a whole new meaning, and the reader may not know which one the writer is going for.

These are two completely separate concepts:
I would rather brew a pale ale than go to the LHBS to get ingredients for a brown ale.
I would rather brew a pale ale then go to the LHBS to get ingredients for a brown ale.
