Honestly I've never heard of it. Doesn't look like it is really well known. You might try contacting the brewery directly and asking for some hints or creative advice. Some breweries are forthcoming on recipe information, some a bit vague, and some won't help at all. Never hurts to try. Once you get some information, you might post back here with what you were told, and some of the recipe experts here might be able to give you a good idea where to go.

I don't have a recipe and I can't find Lohrer Urtyp 1878 in the states or online. I have some friends from Dover AFB bring me the beer back from Ramstein, Germany once a month. If you want a beer that tastes very similar to 1878 you may want to try Ayinger OktoberFest Märzen which is available in some liquor stores (at least near me) and online.

Thanks for the posts everyone. Since my son is flying different missions for the USAF he does not go through Ramstein any longer and so no Lohrer 1878. I'm trying to make contact with some other AF pilots that may now be flying out of Dover AFB to secure some supplies. I did brew up a German Pilsner that was very good and the family loved it but it was not Lohrer 1878. Our family considers 1878 the finest brew ever to cross our lips so I keep searching for a great clone. I have not contacted the brewer yet and since Lohrer sold to another company a few years back it may become even more difficult. Keep brewing!
