So. I made a spot on hefeweizen. Simple. 60/40 with cascade.

Three gallon batch. No starter.

Waited patiently to get down to 70 degrees to put in. Wlp320. When I opened it the yeast sprayed out all over the place.

I got about 1/4 of what was supposed to be in the vial into the fermenter.

Uggg. I tossed in half a package of safbrew wb06

Glad I have extra yeast packets.

Hope it doesn't taste like crap.

I've done it. Had to run over and grab another vial, this was before I made starters. I never looked but it wasn't completely evident that you had to slowly open the vial and re-close after you take it from the fridge to allow pressure to release. I bet more people have done it than we know.

You'll get everything down. It's a learning process and a fun one at that.

I shook the vial a few times they then let it sit out for 4/5 hours. Then opened. Bam.

Someone should do a tutorial on how to open liquid yeast. Lol

Actually that's a great idea, except for one thing: White Labs is changing their packaging to a "packet" type container. So in a few months nobody will be needing to learn how to open a vial. Check their website for details.

As far as a tutorial, I can tell you what I do:

Pull vial from fridge.
Crack seal barely to release pressure. Be ready to tighten up if it starts to flow hard. Repeat until pressure is off.
Shake vial to suspend yeast in the liquid. Wait a minute then crack seal as previous.
Allow yeast to warm up. crack seal as before. Shake and open vial and pour contents.

The other option is to sanitize you hands and the vial and open that sucker right over the fermentor and pray you get it all in there!

I did something like this with wl300 on my hefeweizen but cracked it open over the top of the beer. I'd say I lost some of the yeast but in about 24-30 hrs I had a nice fermentaion going. I know that my one vial without a starter was definetly under pitching and I got to about a FG 1.015 with an OG of 1.050. Good luck, I bet it turns out fine either way!

Lessons learned! Lol. It's bubbling away .I put safbrew wb06 in it. I was just hoping to try out the 320.

Yeah me to, I went with the 300 because it had a more banana taste which turned out really good! Problem was the clove taste was faint at best. I think my next bath of Hefe will be with the 320 as I hear you get more clove.

That's what I wanted... From 320... Honestly. Wbo6 makes a nice beer. So I'm not terribly disappointed. But $8 of 320 yeast on the floor.

Open it like you would a plastic soda bottle thats been shook up. Crack it open to vent the gas then open it.
