I've also seen cases where pulling the battery doesn't help until you also unplug the cord and press the power button to discharge the motherboard completely. That's rare, but it has happened. At least on the PC laptops I've dealt with.
Actually, I seemed to remember doing this as well when I had my problem. The capacitors on the MB can hold enough charge to kept some settings going (or some such thing).
