I've also seen cases where pulling the battery doesn't help until you also unplug the cord and press the power button to discharge the motherboard completely. That's rare, but it has happened. At least on the PC laptops I've dealt with.

Actually, I seemed to remember doing this as well when I had my problem. The capacitors on the MB can hold enough charge to kept some settings going (or some such thing).

Please don't take it to Geek Squad. They are not real techs and will only make things worse while overcharging at the same time.

Hard to diagnose what could be wrong w/o seeing the machine but there is a high likelyhood the data is perfectly recoverable. Best option is as mentioned, take the drive out and use an external adapter such as this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812119152

Hook it to another Mac and all files should be instantly accessable. If only a PC is available install HFSExplorer then hook the drive up and you should be able to recover everything.

Thanks for letting me know about the cable guys. I feel much better that I can save my data.

Now vote in my poll for your preferred disposal method.

I almost added recycle to the poll, but I wanted to destroy it for breaking on me.

I guess it would be better for the environment.

You should be able to get at least a good portion of your data back. I recently had a laptop crap it's pants on me. I was abe to recover a bunch of files to an external using system restore. Some folders in a different drive on the same comp were not recovered and are gone forever. That comp continues to not function properly and is still having drive issues. Once there's a problem it seems there's a problem to stay. Still wondering what I should replace it with, if at all.

Good luck. I'm thinking about fixing it with a pair of pliers and a blowtorch.

I'd recycle. We used to pay for recycle at work, but I found that Goodwill will take it for free. I just toss my old junk on the pile at work and take it down when we have a truck going that way.

Purchased SATA to USB cable and installed HFS Extractor... All Data saved.
