I’m making up my xmas list and have some cat lovers on it. I’m going to make the dog treats that are listed all over this forum and was wondering if cats enjoy spent grains. Can’t find anything on this forum or searching the inter web. Would be pretty sweet to give out all homemade brewing related products this year.

Our cat, who won't eat people food (a good thing), likes it when I give him a bit of spent grain. He only eats a small bit, but always seems to want some when I brew. Does not like it with rice hulls in it though, go figure.

Cats are carnivores, and dogs are much more omnivores. My dog will eat anything including carrots but my cat will not. My cat will eat a bit of tuna, but would never touch a veggie or grain.

I wonder if a tuna-infused spent grain treat would work? Otherwise, I have no idea!

A cats diet should consist of meat bone and organs. That's what they eat in the wild and that's what they should be eating. Most cats that have health issues is due to crappy commercial cat food. Ive seen many cats with health issues cause of it. A cat will not eat any grain type treat and if it does then thats not good for it at all.

Just chiming in to say i love cats.

I am making up my Christmas gift list and have some cat lovers on it. Anyone know if cats enjoy the grain treats that listed all over this forum the way dogs do/ have a recipe that cats do like? Im thinking just add some sardine or tuna can water to the treats?

No, cats are carnivores and dogs are omnivores. Dogs love spent grain, and eat all sorts of things but cats do not.

Wait. Is this like groundhog day?!?! I feel like we've had this conversation before................

Giving the odd spent grain treat to a cat won't harm it, but honestly even with tuna added, most cats simply won't like them due to them not being meaty enough. Treats generally have to be really meaty (or high in fake-meat flavour like Temptations, yuck) for cats to like them.

Of course there are exceptions, some cats love everything. My old cat loved having a tiny piece of the dog's cookies. But for cats you don't know and are giving as gifts? I can almost guarantee you it's a waste of time. And if the owners are savvy enough to know that cats are obligate carnivores vs. dogs who are opportunistic carnivores, then they may not want to feed them anyway.

My dog, however, would like you to send spent grain dog treats our way, because he claims the huge bin of spent grain biscuits I made him just aren't enough.

I have a cat that goes nuts for marinara sauce. Used to have one that loved the smell of green olives.

I don't think I've had any that were interested in barley. And as far as dogs go, I think they are more interested in the peanut butter. You would probably have to use chicken or tuna to get a cat slightly interested in it.

Put down a bowl of corn flakes in front of a dog and another in front of a cat and see what happens.... That will give you a clue!

This happened once with me and raisin bran with my back turned. The dog wouldn't go near it, the cat ate a few flakes of it. My cat was weird. Thankfully neither touched the raisins, since they can be toxic.

That reminds me- many years ago we had a cat that LOVED waffles with syrup. She would meow and cry whenever anybody had waffles, but not pancakes.

She loved waffles with butter and syrup. Weird. She otherwise only ate cat food and the occasional mouse.

My kids probably somehow warped her into that behavior, but she was 17 when she died so it didn't seem to hurt her any.
