When 2016's Bourbon Counties were released I was at a bar that had a limit of 1 bottle of 1 variety per person. The first person in line got the Barleywine and everyone was surprised. After that everyone wanted the coffee and that's what I got. In hindsight I should have gone for the Barleywine.

Lesson learned for next year.

That glass looks really clean!

I really like this beer.

One of the foregoing statements is true.

Doesn't get much better than this. 08 and right in the sweet spot. Molasses/caramelized sugar/creme brulee and a flavor I can only describe as yam/sweet potato (but in a good way). Love this ******* beer.

why are you hiding the talkbeer glass tho

Any idea if it's a second filling after .Rar 2015? I would have to imagine it is...

At the brewery during Rare Day the barrels were labeled as "Rare Barleywine". Rare was already bottled by then so I'm assuming this is second use barrels from Rare 2015. Unless they had another whole batch of the HH 35 year barrels, but waiting a year and half to fill them with Barleywine seems odd. Rare 2015 second use barrels makes the most sense and kind of fits into the 20 month aging timeline

why didnt they just call it king henry 2017? they didnt mind calling it rare 2015 and that guy was completely different than rare 2010

Gregg Hall is no longer involved at Goose Island, and King Henry was a reference to his son (I believe Sofie is a reference to his daughter?).

So for branding perspective adding the Reserve tag makes some sense especially if they want to continue making this product in the future.

My $.02

from a branding perspective, calling it king henry would have been a far superior choice than, people will be going nuts for it

also didnt gregg hall leave like 6 months before king henry was released?

but i get where your coming from.

I know it's been said before, but we (beer nerds) vastly overestimate our position compared to the general public even when it comes to limited / rare beer releases. King Henry is a break from the standard Bourbon County brand, and as a result a large percentage of people wouldn't even realize it was part of the same series as Bourbon County, Bourbon County Coffee, Bourbon County Barleywine, Bourbon County Rare, Bourbon County Proprietors, etc...

King Henry was released in November 2011, the sale to In Bev occurred in March 2011. However, the family was still actively involved in the brand, labels had already been submitted for TTB approval, etc... At this point making a clear break from the past makes sense.

Tagging Lansman as he might have some additional insight into things I've missed.

really looking forward to this one, especially with wh2 on the horizon

very unique flavor in this guy, which i like to see now and than. kinda taste like it was blended with a wee heavy as it has strong peat flavors and some smokiness.

it's alright, i wouldn't buy it again, but it was a cool try
