Is it dead?

I have this WLP002 for a long time. The expiration date says Jan 15 2015

I've used expired yeast before without problem, but this one here looks weird. I had to shake it a LOT to bring it into suspension, but it always stay floculated like that and won't dissolve completely. It also settled down really fast when I put it back to the fridge.

Thinking into make a starter right now to check if still alive

I very much doubt it's dead, 1968 is pretty hardy. Make a starter n see.

It looks like that anyway, should be fine. Make a starter

probably fine. WLP002 (WY1968) is a pretty high floc strain

I will make a proper starter, decant it after 2 days and keep on the fridge until a brew the next IPA

You may want to look through the Blogs on Woodlandbrew's site too as there are a lot of interesting experiments reported on there too. Some of the results call into question the calcuators in Mr. Malty.
