I can only ask this 1 question before my brain tires...

if surface area ratio has nothing to do with it then why do smaller barrels diffuse oxygen into wort/beer faster than larger barrels?

Again, it is a permeability issue. Seal length versus volume not surface area versus volume. Just look at the comparison of a glass carboy and a plastic bucket with identical volumes.

Just seeing this. Wow. First, there is a difference between oxygen exposure and dissolved oxygen in the beer. IMO brewers are waaaaaaay to afraid of oxygen exposure.

I don't get pellicles on my sour beers, because I keep the ******* oxygen out of them. That, and they're only in the fermenter for 8 - 10 weeks.
