I went ahead and bought a Barley Crusher Malt Mill!!!! Woo Hoo!! Now I can only blame myself for my efficiencies :cross: What setting/spacing should I start with to improve my efficiency??

Thanks!!!

Chris

I started at around 0.037" and got efficiencies the same as the LHBS mill, then went down to 0.032" without conditioning and went up by 8 points.

I condition and crush at 0.025, 80% efficiency, batch sparger. I'd be interested in other peoples efficiencies.

I batch sparge. What is grain conditioning????

I believe it's wetting the grains slightly before milling.

I just completed my mill build a couple weeks ago and have only had a chance to use it once. I got a little over 80% at 0.045", constantly recirculating eHERMS, and fly sparging.

this may be a dumb question but how do you measure the gap?

Feeler gauges...

Cheers!

Here's another dump question... when people say .032, are you guys referencing millimeters? I need to buy a feeler guage myself and they seem to come in different ranges. Not sure which I need, nor where is cheapest.

That's inches. You'll want to be able to measure .025" - .050", most likely through a combination of several blades. Have some rice hulls available when you experiment with your gap as a stuck sparge really sucks and it's easy to go too far for what your system will allow.
