I love NECCO wafers. It's right up there with Atomic Fireballs and Lemonheads.

FIREBALLS! Yes! Had one recently and they have not changed a bit. Except for the price. When I was a kid, they were a penny apiece. I used to sneak into the cupboard and steal dimes from my Mom's "vacation fund" jar and spend it on candy at the corner grocery store. She's 92. Do you think I should I tell her?

Really? Think mom didn't know? Psh...Moms know everything! She knows. It wasn't critical to the efficient running of the house, so she let you get away with it, just so you would think you were gettin' one over on her ;)

I have very fond memories of NECCO.. My grandparents lived in walking distance of an old Gas station.. the kind that was still owned by an individual person.. not a ginormous brand... and they sold those.. we'd walk there and get a sleeve when i spent the night. I miss those days.

my papa worked at a candy distributor. had a HUGE stash in the dresser right next to his rocker-recliner. always knew when something was missing, knew which one of us grandkids took it.

my favorites were SweeTarts and Tootsie Pop Drops

This.... definitely miss those times. They didn't stock candy, but the guys at the gas station would keep returnable coke bottles for me, and I'd go every few days to get them, take them to the mom & pop grocery, get my money and spend it on NECCO's, JuJubes, Candy Cigarettes.... :rockin:

Reminds me of when we were kids in the summer living in northern Michigan. The local gas station had a push-lever Coke machine. The owner would see us coming and grab a dime for each of us out of the till and let us help ourselves to a free pop (as we called it up north). We'd sit on the concrete island and lean against the pumps and sip away. If a car pulled in for gas, we'd just move our feet enough so they didn't get run over. Heaven.

Update on Kettle Corn...

I was eating some yesterday that was almost a week old. It was still good! Except now I have a kernel stuck in my throat! Why do you do this to me kettle corn, I respected you, treated you well, and you smite me down in my prime!

Doesn't surprise me one bit.

Kettle Corn is an evil mistress you will love her and she will treat you a dog

accept it, before it DESTROYS YOU!

I used to buy Now and Later candy with my lunch money at the (real, old fashioned) gas station, then charge my lunch. I was skinny and scraggly looking. The lunch ladies probably though we were poor. :(

Now and Later's are delicious (although wrappers sticking to candy was terrible). I kind of want to go hunt some down. I believe Laffy Taffy is a better taffy candy as I can get terrible jokes/puns with candy.

I will never be assimilated, to accept that evil thing no matter how you tempt me with chocolate drizzle and that white candy that CLAIMS to be chocolate. Is not. Ever. Never. Will be. Chocolate. THAT my friends, is an abomination of candydom. :(

White "Chocolate" as it so boldy calls itself, is nothing more than 'plain' candy. It attempts to elevate itself to the throne of that which is the god of candy: chooooocolaaaaaate but cannot ever become such. It is missing the best ingredient that makes it so: "FERMENTED" Cocoa Beans...... so it's a natural for us homebrewers. Making that white stuff, by default, UN Natural.... aka evil, so it makes sense that someone would put that evil white stuff on the other evil stuff. :goat:

Laffy Taffy, Dark Chocolate and Toffee all good candy. Kettle corn is just a side like a bag of potato chips.

Speaking of Kettle cooked stuff. Why is it that it is so hard to find non-kettle cooked chips anymore? Am I the only one who likes the standard boring regular flavor Lays potato chip? Or their Salt and Vinegar, or BBQ, etc. Crinkle cut is fine with me too. But I am not a fan of the kettle cooked chips, and rarely find the option anymore when I buy a sandwich or something. Its only kettle cooked, Doritos and Sun Chips.

It might be due to having to lower the fat content or the demand for healthier products. I do agree some flavors are better when made non-kettle cooked.

Exactly. Why do I have to suffer because I have a metabolism that will let me eat like a 600 pound mouth-breather and still weigh as much as BK?

I am just glad that the Wow chips didnt catch on mainstream

don't make them anymore, but back in my navy days, I lived on these

non-kettle, but had that kettle-type extra crunch

I'm also a firm believer that potato chips should not be flavored. Anything that isn't potato, oil, and salt isn't a potato chip (In honor of Gary_Oak)! But seriously, I can eat an entire bag of non-flavored chips, but the second they are flavored I can only eat a few before it's too much.

What I have noticed is, WHY THE HELL ARE CHIPS NOT SALTY ANYMORE?!?!

I don't give a crap about what sources say, salt tastes good and I want it on my chips. Grrrr.

(And Alton Brown tells me the whole salt = HBP has been debunked.)

Also, I love fish and "chips," so I'll just leave this here.
