Big RIS using WLP002 calls for a 4 L starter since I don't have a stir plate yet. My plan is to do a 2L starter for 36hrs, cold crash, decant the liquid leaving the slurry. How do I do another 2L starter on top of this slurry and will my 2L flask hold this??? Odds of a blowoff??? Thanks for the help I'm new to doing starters.

Update: I went to lhbs to get the yeast and bought a 1gal Growler for the starter. I'm doing a 2.5gal starter now will chill decant then pitch another 2l starter on this slurry. Hopefully should take care of things for this RIS.

It's pretty simple. Let the starter ferment. Cold crash it. Decant liquid. Make up some fresh wort. Cool, add to flask.

The problem is that a 2L flask filled with 2L of starter is going erupt all over your counter. If you can snag some fermcap from the brewstore, that will keep foaming down and you'll be able to fill it up a bit higher than normal.

Of course, if you are doing all that..... a much simpler (and tastier) way to grow up enough yeast is to just make a small batch of a lower OG beer. eg a gallon or two of mild or a dry stout. Rack off the yeast cake immediately before brewing your RIS and you'll have plenty of yeast.

Ok thanks, I'll just do it the traditional way, with the fermcap. Did a 2L starter for a Belgian IPA with wyeast Abbey and avoided the blowover, so hopefully I'll avoid it again. I'm gonna go get the yeast and do the starter today for brewing next Thursday.

1) Brew an ESB with WLP002
2) Rack ESB to keg
3) Pitch slurry to RIS
4) Enjoy ESB while watching RIS ferment.

LOL, the traditional way would be to pull your starter from the fermenter of the last brew.

Make your starter in a gallon pickle jar or other large container. There is no requirement to use a flask. I use plastic Rubber Maid container.
Only difference is you boil and cool the wort in a kettle.
