Greetings,

I wasn't sure whether to post this in Beginner's Forum but since its mostly about the yeast, there it goes.

It's been almost two weeks in the fermenter and at the bottom of the fermenter there seems to be a high amount of yeast accumulation when compared with what I see on the net. Is this normal or did I somehow overfed them or something? There is no more considerable airlock activity however occasionally I see some particles rocketing up from the bottom of the fermenter and these dirt like things (either yeast swimming up or hop residue, if not enlighten me please) started accumulating on the surface as well.

I attached the photos, can someone kindly explain to me why this is the case?

I think that looks great. You also have to consider the ratio of that growler is different than say a 6.5 gal carboy so looks can be deceiving with considering the principle of conservation. Proceed!

It's not just yeast. Most of it is probably trub - residue from hops, proteins, grains, etc. Different recipes can produce different amounts of trub. Looks fine.

I believe you guys are right. Perhaps I need a strainer with finer mesh. Also I like the idea of free yeast but dont know how to preserve them until my next brew day? Can someone guide me to somewhere with the related information? Or perhaps if not complicated, explain it in few words?

Thanks!

Before answering this, what is your method of getting the beer out of that container?

I will siphon it out using the blow off tube and the clamp.

Okay.

Do what you will do.

But before you do, seek out articles on this board about "Yeast washing." Once you "Wash" your yeast, you can repitch it. If you wait more than a week, then just make a starter before pitching that yeast. Just make sure you keep your yeast in the refrigerator and brew within............... 30 days? yeah I think that's good enough.

Allright, thanks for the information cannman! I'll seek out the washing procedure.

I had a huge sediment on one of my brews: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/showthread.php?t=580992.

I only got 3.5 gallons out of this batch, even after two days of cold crashing at 30°F. Still haven't figured out why it happened. Making another Hefeweizen as soon as my LHBS gets their Imperial Yeast shipment (hopefully in a few days).
