That Map Room event sounds spectacular. I've always wanted to have that kind of a challenge. Albeit I would suck at it.

I know a lot of you folks are bourbon drinkers, so I thought I'd pass this along. Just posted by Niche Restaurant in Geneva, IL:
We are going to be doing a blind bourbon tasting. We will be using 10 of our best bourbons, which will include a Pappy Van Winkle, older Wild Turkey and Parkers Heritage. I will not list the exact year or bourbon, as I want to truly know what everyone thinks of each. There will be light snacks provided and of course plenty of bourbon to go around.
The tasting will be held Saturday, March 28th at 3:00pm.
$125.00 per person
Reservations are a must and is limited to only 10 people.

I'm sure it will end up being a worthwhile event, but (as someone who knows very little aside from what my friends in the industry have told me about Niche) I would feel uncomfortable giving up $125.00 for 10 bourbons without knowing I was trying stuff that was worth that price.

That's $12.50 a pour. Might be a stretch for anything less than 1 oz of each, but have you seen how much a glass of mid-level whiskey runs in the city?

If they are pouring oz pours of everything than by all means that is a pretty good deal considering the few hints they dropped.

As someone who frequents Delilah's / Twisted Spoke / Longman & Eagle on a sporadic basis I totally hear you, but at least then I know what I'm paying for instead of being surprised.

longman's prices on pretty much everything but some of the ultra-old whiskeys like EW23 are actually pretty reasonable in my experience. they generally follow the 3 pours = bottle retail cost sort of formula, not too uncommon in the industry from what i understand.

Interesting event at the Map Room this weekend:

BEERS IN THE DARK

26 Drafts shrouded in secrecy. Can you tell what beers we have on tap? There will be three levels of difficulty.

EASY: Order from a menu listing styles of beer on draft, you name the brewery.
MEDIUM: No menu, guess the beer style being served to you...name the brewery.
HARD: You are BLINDFOLDED. Identify the style and name the brewery.

Prizes for top guesses!

Doors open at 11 am and all draft beer identities will be obscured.

You may order from a menu listing styles on draft; e.g., ‘American Pale Ale’, ‘Belgian Dubbel’, and so on.

Beers from the menu will be priced like we price our regular beers, half sizes at half-size prices will be available.

For $15, you can get a flight of 7 4-ounce beers. no menu. you will be provided a worksheet wherein you can try to guess the style and brewery of each of the 7 beers served to you.

For the very brave, you can get the same flight described above at the same price, but you’ll be blindfolded. The blindfolded tastings start at 1 p.m.

Identities of beers revealed as kegs blow, or 4 p.m.

anyone very very tempted to go try the blindfolded one with me?

Holland knows i can tell things by sight if i know what i'm picking from... im curious how id do totally blind.

Is there a list of possible beers or are you actually guessing which beer it is out of the tens of thousands possibly distributed to Chicago?

the 'hard' challenge sounds actually impossible unless you have a completely ludicrous taste memory and have ticked absolutely everything in chicago's distro. if i weren't going to the transient party, i'd probably be up for going and doing the 'medium' challenge.

Beer Temple had to go & tweet that they got CW BB barleywine at the exact time I was picking my kids up from school, on an evening when I'm stuck at home because my wife has a work thing going on. And then of course some CCBE ******* felt compelled to rebroadcast the tweet. The CCBE thread already has haul pics in it. You know that **** is long gone by now.

I may have over thought this, but we are talking draft-only beers. In addition, while there may be some in there to throw people off, I am guessing that Map Room will put on a lot of their old stand-by drafts. That is a good starting point if you visit Map Room with any regularity.

I am very tempted to do the hard test, just for funsies.

Y'know, I'm totally on board with being the guy who laments how things that used to sit on shelves for months- like CW's BBW, as recently as two years ago- get swiped in minutes. And even though I only hear about CCBE stupidity from this forum, I'm all for letting those people get a lot of that blame.

But it's not like The Beer Temple is your secret spot. Every person interested in beer in Chicago follows Chris on Twitter. CCBE "rebroadcasting" something that everyone already heard isn't the problem here. They would be selling out of that tonight whether CCBE mentioned it or not.

Also, looking at the post again, you don't have to actually name the beer? *******, if they put a Three Floyds hoppy beer in front of me and I can't figure out that hop profile, may god strike me dead.

RIP.

Looking forward to the birth of @saisonhunk.

I believe you missed the fact that I also assigned 1/3 of the blame each to my wife and to Beer Temple themselves - care to weigh in? ;)

All joking aside, you're right that beers would still vanish today in a way that would've been unheard of a few years ago, with or without CCBE. But seeing the info reposted there with "In case you missed it, GO! RUN! NOW!" and haul pics is just an extra kick in the nuts.

Wait. People actually post pictures of beer they bought at a local shop? Like **** they just walked in and bought? Not even standing-in-line ****? Are you ******* kidding me?

Somehow, this whole thing got worse.

That BA wheat wine with raspberries is ******* truth. Certainly a top 5 beer for me so far this year.

I do lament the focus this thread has had on CCBE, but it has truly been in rare form.

Someone just got banned for using a racial slur as part of an (incorrect) criticism of another's math...all in relation to an OP who is trying to sell growler fills of FBS from his kegerator ($15 for 64oz) that he clearly regrets purchasing.

maximthegreat, push the button.
