Different Hops for Red Ale

We just tried our first batch of red ale that we did, and it turned out pretty good. We are thinking of doing the same beer, but changing the hops up a little. The recipe used Fuggles, and Cascade. Any suggestions for what else might work well in a red ale??? Thanks!!!! Joe V

I make an all grain brew that gets :

1 oz of centennial at 60 minutes
1 oz of cascade at 15 minutes
0.5 oz cascade at 5 minutes

Both my wife and I like it a lot.

I did this once. It was the best beer I have made to date:

1.00 Magnum (10.0%AA) 60
0.50 Cascade (5.5%AA) :10
1.00 Cascade (5.5%AA) :00

Jamil uses Centennial along with Cascade in the same schedule for his red/amber ale.

For a Red, not a big fan of Cascades. I love Fuggles and I use them in a Irish Red I make often. Possible look at replacing the Cascade with a Stirling or Saaz.. Those make for a great smooth beer!

I guess we need to clear up what kind of "red" we are talking about here. For an American Amber/Red, Cascade is in style and Sterling/Saaz are not.

I use Sterling and and Willamette at 20 and 10 then dry hop with Cascade. It's won a few ribbons in category 10B.

As I recall Deschutes Cinder Cone Red used Amarillo and Tettnang. It was pretty good. I think spicy hops blend well with citrus American hops.

This is what Deschutes provided me when I asked about Cinder Cone a while back (no amounts, AA or times):

Cascade
Amarillo
Simco
Tettnanger

I know the brewer for Lake Superior Brewery and they used EKG in the Mesabi Red

Big fan of East Kent Goldings in my Reds.

My last Red I used Willamette. 1 oz at 60, and 1 at 5.

1oz Williamette 2 mins
Taste Great! Not overpowering and really lets you appreciate the roasted barley if you go that route

Thanks for all the great suggestions. We are actually growing some northern brewer hops so prob gonna try that combined with willamette first. More then likely gonna try all the suggestions before we're done. Thanks everybody!!!
