Carb stones where to place?

I have been doing a lot of reading on carb stones connected to the inlet pipe but no one seems to go into where to place in the keg. Do you let it sit on the bottom? if so does this not stir up any sediment every time a little more co is added? or do you keep it up a little say 3 inches from the bottom so as to not disturb and sediment?
