I'm converting a Bayou Classic 40-qt kettle to electric. Things will be fairly crowded at the bottom with an element, bulkhead, screen, thermostat, and sight glass barb. I think I can avoid the element contacting all of them except possibly the screen. I have the screen that looks like a tube of toothpaste. Will it hurt the element or the screen if I can't keep them from contacting each other?

Thanks!

Carlo:)

If the screen you refer to is a filter on your exit tube, then I would be very concerned about the element scorching particulates that accumulate on the outside of the screen.

The element touching other metals in the brew pot is not a problem.

Scorching stagnant grain is a whole separate topic. Grain in contact with the element is a concern unless you stir constantly while firing the element.

Thanks for writing. We are doing BIAB and the Bayou Classic has a basket that holds the grain and the bag so grains shouldn't be in contact with the element. I'll see if I can keep everything separate but I'm glad to hear the element to screen contact doesn'tseem to be a problem.
