after planning out my small (volume) imperial stout test batch, I realized that instead of just doing a no-sparge and dumping the grain (or using it for bread), I should just do a partigyle and sparge for a 2nd (still small volume) beer.

now, according to randy moshers partigyle table: here,

if im doing a 1/3, 2/3 split batch, I need a 1070 OG to end up with first runnings at 1105, and second runnings at 1052.

is this preboil or postboil?

if its postboil (which Im leaning towards), how would one back calculate to figure out what preboil needs to be (and adjust recipe accordingly)?

any help would be greatly appreciated, especially if im waaaayyy offfff.

thanks all.

Pre-boil to post boil is based on your system. What is your average evaporation and gravity change. Every brew system is different. You would have to know what your brew system average is then adjust from there. Generally it is around 1 plato or .005

whew, youre up late too.

i lose about 1.25 gal per hour during boil. Is there a calculation I can do from that to figure out my gravity increase pre to post boil?

Im thinking the gravity adjustment is already made in beertools pro, true?

theres no fixed value to add to get pre-boil compared to post-boil. If you're getting about 1.25 gallons of boil off on a 5 gal batch, then you're pre-boil OG would be around 80% of the post-boil (5g/6.25gal). The same ratio applies to whatever volume you're actually using.

To answer the question those tables take into account anticipated preboil gravities. Even then those are estimations. If you want to hit your gravities exactly keep some DME and water on hand to adjust accordingly.

one more question to those of you who have done partigyle.

when you sparge for your partigyle wort, do you plan for any losses, or since the grain is already saturated, can you just assume water in will equal wort out?
