I am planning on making a Vanilla Stout and I just realized that my LHBS doesn't carry black patent malt. I am looking for suggestions on a substitution.

Grain (Extract) Bill for my 2.5 gallon batch:
3.5 lb Dark LME
6 oz Black Patent Malt
2 oz Roasted Barley Malt

What else do they carry? German Carafa II would be OK although with a beer based on dark extract I don't how much darker it really needs to be. You could also try a dark chocolate malt.

Man, that is a huge amount of BP for a small batch! Anyway, chocolate malt is probably your best bet. Any malt that is 400L or higher, except more Roasted Barley. Sometimes Black Patent is called Black Malt.
