Been lurking for a bit, first post. I just had to share a eureka moment I just had.

Brewing has been killing my back! Lifting and moving around carboys and full buckets has been leaving me sore. This morning I had a moment and thought about furniture movers (the squares with wheels on them).

A quick search I found this guy at the hardware store: http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4312609

It's a perfect fit for a bucket or carboy and doesn't take up a lot of space. This is exactly what I needed.

Maybe it will help someone else, maybe it won't, either way I know I will be feeling good after brew day today!

Anyone else got any other back-saver solutions?

I built a dolly. All you need is some wood and casters.

Brew haulers are nice for carboys.

Lift with your legs.

Another useful device is the 1000lb capacity mini furniture dolly sold by Harbor Freight. Often under $10 US.

I use this as well to set my Grainfather on. It makes it so easy to wheel around the basement from my brewing area to the laundry sink. Had the coupon from HF and got it for just around $10, maybe less.

Space constraints and consideration for lifting encouraged me to adopt the practice of putting everything on wheels

Harbor Freight has really inexpensive casters - about three or four bucks for a nice 3.5" caster. Everything is now on wheels. Grain mill cart, brew stand, cart for boiler, and fermenter cart. Makes things nice not just for moving things around, but it also helps putting things away with no help. I have a tight space to fit everything in at the end of the day and wheels make it easy to push the brew stand right where it needs to go - it is out of the way making clean up easy. Even the kettle can be rolled over next to the utility sink for chilling and my grain storage is on wheels. All about the wheels!

A little creativity and some wheels and you have a modular and easily movable system.

My best back saving device is the bag and ratcheting pulley for the grain bag. Also improves my efficiency and makes clean up easier.

That's a win win win.

I often brew with my 25 year old and make him do the heavy lifting LOL!

How much does Ace Hardware charge you for one of those? :)

I like that Ace device; I have a 5-gallon bucket of Star-San I'm always schlepping around the garage, would be nice to just roll it.

Along the lines of things that roll, depending on one's circumstances and needs, you can get furniture dollies from home stores (example: https://www.menards.com/main/tools-...3-c-12175.htm?tid=-6169123793788416663&ipos=1 ) and either build something on it, or remove and use the casters. In the case of this one, it's only $8, which means....$2 per caster.

I used one of those to make a rolling cabinet in my garage, a set of rolling shelves for brewing stuff so I could tuck shelving against other shelving, and most recently, a rolling mill cart. In both cases, I dismantled part of the dolly and attached the crosspieces with the casters to the shelves or cart. I have in other cases built a rolling cupboard/cabinet right on the dolly.

The ideas are almost endless. Given the price for that dolly today at Menards, I think I'll go get an extra just to have around.
