My buddy borrowed my all grain equipment to do his first AG batch, and has encountered a lot of bumps in the road. The latest being that the airlock on his carboy has popped off twice. He's ony using a five gallon, so I'm pretty sure the carboy is too full. Would it be wise to just pour the entire thing into a six gallon fermentation bucket it to give it some more head room?

It's probably because the lip of the carboy and the bung are wet with water or sanitizer. Have him dry it carefully with a clean papertowel and put the bung back in when it's dry. He will probably need a blow off tube, though, if he's got 5 gallons in a 5 gallon carboy.

I haven't had any problems with blowoff tubes. Just check it from time to time to make sure things look good and it's clear.
