There's not too many good bars around here, just plenty of great brewbups. Which is both good and bad. Miss me some Flying Saucer and Moth, tell you that. You people mentioning interested buildings should visit McMenamins whenever you're here. Their beer isn't the best, especially the staples that havent changed in probably 20 years, but the brewpub-unique seasonals are usually pretty good. All of their buildings are older converted ones. There's one from an old church, a lighthouse, an elementary school etc. And best of all they have cajun tots.

A converted lighthouse I would love to see. That sounds really interesting

Friendly Friends, I thought of this over the weekend and figured someone here might enjoy it.
I've got this bottle of RBC: Irish Breakfast Ale and want to send it to someone who can't get it.

If you're interested in winning this bottle (and a few other RBC favorites),
I've got a quick contest that will run from now until I leave work at 5pm EST (or until people DGAF):

- Be a friendly friend
- Post a picture of anything City of Buffalo related
- Tell me why you like the picture, the place, thing, or person in the picture
- It doesn't have to be a picture you took
- One entry per person
- People I've sent beer to previously will have a minor handicap, only because I'd like to get RBC to someone new.

I'll choose a winner by the end of the day, if there is interest.

It might be a good idea to tag me if you want entered. I don't get all quote notifications, but I keep a close eye. If you don't see your name and you posted, let me know. If you don't see your name and you posted something that didn't fit the few, very simple rules, you lose

I'm not sure I've experienced much in terms of unique bars. I had heard there was an ice bar in Minneapolis at one point, but never went there. Surly is fairly unique in that they operate a huge beer hall and have a beer garden that's open in the summer. But they also have a fancier restaurant upstairs where they pair upscale food with their beers. That's a pretty unique experience.

@Hunter_la5 isn't here, so @m00ps
Need somebody else to pick up his slack.

Always miss so much crap over the weekend.
@hunter_la5 - congrats you lucky bastard
@Psylocide - sucks, sucks, always sucks. But at least itll get better from here. Thats been my experience with loved ones in declining health at least

Can the picture be CLOSE to Buffalo, perhaps 25 minutes away. (not the Niagara falls, ofcourse.)

That's pretty rad. Can you see the thatch work from the inside, too, or is it covering an actual roof?

It's ben a while since I've been home and even longer since i was in the upstairs section where the windows peeking from under the thatch are. If I remember rightly, the thatch is not visible anywhere.

Here are some inside shots

And Lucan village for perspective.

Sorry. I'm long overdue a trip home. Pining for creamy pint of the black stuff now.
Nope, not cape ... :beard:

Sorry Smurf. Thought it looked like Cape. Is that you? Great video and cool setup.

Bullshirt! Rigged!

I've never spent any significant time in Buffalo, aside from passing through on the way to/from the falls, but one of my good friends spent a couple years there while doing his pharmacy rotations, and had nothing but nice things to say about the city and its residents. He would have settled there permanently if he hadn't gotten a job offer in Chicago, where his GF lived.

Here's some people ice-skating:

I'll go with Buffalo WY!
Very out door oriented and nothing like a trail ride with a kitty watching you! :D

LOL Man, we probably used the same tour company. This place was awesome. I forgot all about it. Its hard to pick out just a few pieces of architecture from Bath. That city was beyond beautiful.

We don't use tour companies - we book the stuff ourselves (only exception was the tuscan wine tour since we didn't have a car in Italy.)

We book tours when we don't want to drive :mug: Most of the time we get ahead of the group, particularly for areas like Windsor. We got so far ahead of the tour groups that I was able to slow dance with my wife in the ball room alone (aside from the docent who just sat in the doorway and smiles at us)

I present to you, The Historic Lodge, originally serving as Buffalo Lodge #846 of the Free & Accepted Masons

Ground was broken shortly after WWI and built in 1925 by architect Frank A. Spangenberg and Tross Construction Corp.

The building now serves as a banquet hall for large events.

The George Washington room

The first ever 14-foot Kittinger council table (later included in their catalog) is still situated beneath an original 1926 painting of the most famous mason, George Washington. Illuminating the room is a vintage reverse painted oil-on-glass globe, accented with bronze stars and rings. In this same room is the original Trazio flooring, resembling a giant chess board when viewed from above.

The Sapphire Room

This was the original meeting hall. Constructed with the utmost secrecy in mind, the building is windowless and completely sound proof. At the front of the hall, you will find a light-up Masonic “G” symbol hanging over a low stage. The half-dome ceiling that it hangs from is painted with traditional Masonic symbols. An array of Masonic relics are on display throughout, including robes, staffs, original signage and even a watercolor depicting The Lodge as it was almost 100 years ago.

Rescued from Demolition

Years later, due to waning membership, it was decided that this location was no longer needed as a stand-alone Lodge and was to be sold. Originally slated for demolition so the site could be used as a parking lot, it was saved from this fate by Stephen L. Phillips. He recognized the beauty and historical significance of the property and after a several-month-long battle, Phillips became the proud owner of The Lodge.
