Also the tagging notification on here doesn't bug me since I shut off the emails. What's bugged me is the nonstop string of texts about school closings tomorrow. Literally ever 5-10 minutes.

I think the bigger issue here is that you're getting text notifications from all the local elementary schools...... :eek:
 
Nice. I like that it adjusts for temp.

You shouldn't be reading at mash temp anyway. Destroys the probe in addition to everything chemically wrong with it. Kind of making temp correction not horrendously useful (as the shift between varying degrees of room temp isn't significant).

I've actually been working these past few days. New research project, I'll be in and on during the days for a few weeks. Once I get everything practically running itself, things will return to normal.

Well dammit! I was thinking I wouldnt have to chill the mash sample anymore. BTW, whats the recommended practice for that? Wont the longer I let it sit lead to further conversation and a lower ph?

Pull an ounce or two and ice bath it. Only takes 30 seconds or so to get <90F where I'm comfortable reading it. I forget the actual standard but I think it's 67 or 68F.

Sweet. I've just been putting it in the freezer for like 20 minutes. Ice bath sounds better.

Wife just gave me the OK to brew before my planned RIS brewday. Going to do an ESB to build up a yeast cake to dump the RIS on. Very excited, I like beer.
 
If this thread survives as long as the drinking thread (doubtful, someone will ruin it) it will have over 1 million posts at this pace.
 
Gavin, what pH meter do you use or recommend? I need a new one soon

I use a Hach Pro+

Both it and the Miliawakee mention by Qhrumphf pass all the selection criteria given by the folks in the know
  • 2 point calibration
  • Manual calibration (you decide not the device when to grap the calibration pt.)
  • Replacable electrode
  • Reading stability
  • Resolution 0.01
  • Accuracy +/-0.01 (Not quite true as accuracy is typically measured in RMS values)

Nice. I like that it adjusts for temp.

All pH meters adjust for temperature. Temperature is one of the factors which affects pH and the device can't spit out a pH value without measuring the sample temperature. All ATC means is that it will give the pH at a given temperature. It's like saying my car came with an engine.

Typically pH readings should be recorded and compared at room temperature. That is the convention but it is not followed by all authors.

Temperature extremes are not good for a pH meter's probe. Best to cool the little sample for sake of probe longevity and reproducibility of data.

My meter, buffer pillows and cleaning soln. (don't need storage soln with the Hach Pro+)
