so I'm using 3/8 od copper and 5/8 Id clear hose with16 gauage wire. I got it as straight as I can and used a ton of dish soap but can't get much past 5 feet into the hose. Any other tricks to get it in?

Try setting it out in the sun to see if the outer hose will expand.

How loose is the wire? try rotating the hose against the direction of the wire, so the wire gets pushed snug against the copper rather than out against the hose.

I think there has been debate as to weather the wire helps that much. You might just want to forget about it, or get 3/4 hose. I also have read of guys using KY instead of the soapy water. How long are you making it? I see your location, and figure you've probably got some pretty warm ground water during the summer.
