    Fine (enough?) hop bag

I just received my home brew supply order and the fine mesh hop bags are not as fine as the bags I’ve been using...thought I’d ordered from the same supplier but I guess not. Damn. Where did you get your fine mesh bag if you have one???

Beer gun through a cooler wall?

I'm in the process of building a walk-in cooler and I'm looking for a way to run a beverage line through the wall for my beer gun. My original thought was to find a faucet shank but I'd like to have a way to seal it off when I'm done using it. Any ideas are appreciated

    Finally opening my Brewery!

Hey, I haven't been lurking HBT as much as I once had but thought I'd post as I've recently received word that my zoning has finally been approved! my building permit application was just submitted last week so please send some good karma my way. This has been quite the uphill battle, incase...

    Condenser lid attachment

Hey I had seen somewhere someone had made a condenser lid attachment for condensing the steam from the boil kettle as alternative to a hood vent. Has anyone seen this I can’t seem to find it now. Thanks

    March pump cold side

I was just watching a video of a commercial brewery using a march pump to transfer beer from a barrel to a fermenter. I’d thought you weren’t supposed to use a centrifugal pump on the cold side due to oxygen pickup. Any thoughts on this...

Thinking of building a sanke draftline cleaner using an old keg spear

I’ve been looking at building a draft line cleaner. I know I can buy one but I have some old parts laying around and thought it might be fun to try. So my thought is to cut most of the dip tube off of an old sanke spear and then stretch some silicone tubing over the tube. I would then use a...

    Hops on a hill?

I have a hill on the side of my property that I’m planning on planting a few rhizomes in for ground cover, any thoughts? I’m hoping to put some poles in at some point but initially they will not be trained.

Laser etching - is it a potential to harbor contaminants?

I’m looking at purchasing a conical fermenter and one of the manufacturers uses laser etched volume markers on the interior of the tank. I’ve always thought that one of the big upsides of going to a stainless tank is that the interior is a smooth polished surface. Should I be concerned about...

Short term yeast storage - maintaining a pure viable culture

I’m looking to narrow in on a set of house cultures. I have a bunch of strains that I like but I want to really evaluate strains side by side. I’m thinking about making extra large starters growing enough yeast to pitch and filling small containers with the remainder of the slurry. I plan to...

filling a 55 gallon barrel with 10 gallons batches

I'm looking at filling a 55 barrel brewing 10 gallons a day over the corse of a week. I'm wondering about the yeast pitch rate, I have been thinking that I would brew the initial 10 gallons and pitch at the proper rate and let that ferment to high Krausen and then brew a batch everyday for 6...

Russian Imperial Stout in a fresh whiskey barrel

I just ordered a freshly emptied 15 gallon whiskey barrel and I'm getting ready to fill it. I can't decide what I want to do with it. I would like to get as much of the spirit character as possible. I think ideally I would rack to the barrel after high krausen and then topping off after a...

Authentic small batch product (a way to fight macro craft)?

I've been thinking for a while now that the macro craft beer machine needs to be stopped. If the small guys don't band together to fight big beer the macro craft brands will eventually succeed in thoroughly muddying the waters. My idea is to create something similar to what the Belgian monks...

    Dirty glassware at the bar

So I know I'm a F@(x1n& beer snob and thanks to you F@(xers I can't help it. I try most of the time atleast to not show it but here we are. I'm sitting at a bar and was just served a glass of beer that has bubbles through out the entire side of the glass and I can't help but think that's not a...

    Tankless water heater recommendations?

I'm starting to look at scaling up to larger system and I'm considering using a tankless water heater for strike, sparge and cleaning. I've poked around a few threads but I thought I would just see what recommendations people had for brands or what I need to look for when shopping for one of...

    Acidification using phosphoric acid?

I recently got around to picking up a pH meter and a lomotte water test kit. It's all new so I'm planning on running the tests again before I trust the results but this is what I'm working with currently. My water pH 7.97 100 PPM Total hardness as CaCO3 50 PPM Calcium hardness 12 PPM...

    Fermenator replacement gaskets and parts?

The wife bought me a 7 gallon Fermenator for Christmas a couple of years ago. Unfortunately it's the standard fittings model. I have used it a few times but I just dont like the way I need to completely disassemble it every time. I haven't actually timed the whole ordeal but it just takes way...

    Driving fermentation

I have been thinking about ways to drive fermentation. I have been making strong ales dosing with candy syrup during fermentation, I have also made some meads dosing fermentation with fermaid k, Dap, and a yeast nutrient. This has me wondering if these techniques could be applied to sour beer...
