North Carolina Chest Freezer w Temp Controller in Chapel Hill, NC

FYI, posted here on craigslist. I haven't brewed in quite some time and am looking to free up some space. I will be posting some all grain equipment (brew kettle, mash tun, etc) shortly. Thanks for looking!

    Dry hop timing, refridgeration

So my dfg 60 min ipa will have been dry hopped for seven days on Saturday. I was planning on cold crashing before bottling but I've got a small problem. My fermentation cooler is also housing a seven day old milk stout. Should I bring the milk stout out of the chamber for a few days, or just let...

    Hello from Asheville NC

I've heard a lot of great things about the breweries in Asheville. I myself am in Chapel Hill. One of these weekends I have to head west to check it out.

    Newbie help

I made a really gross batch of beer a few years back that was often described as 'salty'. This was before I had any sort of temperature control - so i chalked it up to that. What was your fermentation temp like? I think DME is typically better than LME, so i'm not sure that would be the source.

    raise OG 2 points

I missed a NB OG by about 5 pts -- thought i'd get my hands dirty with some troubleshooting. Any idea how a measured extract kit could be so off? I made sure to use all of the LME and I'm pretty sure my water volume was solid.

    raise OG 2 points

hi all, If I want to raise the OG of a recipe from 1.042 to 1.047, how would i do that? My current understanding is that i need to add about 25 pts to the entire batch ( 5gallons * 5 pts ). If DME yields about 40 pts per pound, could i just add a small batch of wort with 10oz DME? If this were...

    When to bottle??

to answer your question - bottling too soon can result in overly carbonated bottles. possibly to the point that they could explode. at two weeks your probably okay, but its a good idea to start thinking in terms of attenuation, original gravity, and final gravity.

    When to bottle??

i think this belongs in the Beginners Brew Brewing section. Its usually not a great idea to bottle based on bubble activity. the absence of airlock action does not mean that your beer is done. did you instructions mention an OG or FG? Do you have a hydrometer?

Created vacuum after taking hydrometer reading

you should be fine, star san is safe to consume and doesn't contribute to flavor (at least in the quantities you're talking about)

    Second batch - Cream Ale

Yes, it looks fine. I would take a gravity reading in a few days to be sure of the actual attenuation %.

    Second batch - Cream Ale

Did you take an OG reading before pitching?

    Cooling wart

I do this except I also have one hand stirring the water clockwise and one hand stirring the wort counter-clock wise. I get great results.

Noob Concern - should I cool down my primary fermentation?

in my experience, 75 doesn't kill a beer, but you can taste the flavors imparted by the yeast at those temperatures. in the past a swamp cooler has worked wonders for me, as grinder 12000 suggested.

    Temp Control

Check out Craig's list for chest freezers. After waiting a few days I found a $60 freezer in great condition.

    Ale fermenting at 55 deg

Hi everyone, Ive had a nugget nectar clone with a strong fermentation for 24 hrs at 68 deg. Over night it dropped to 55 deg. It is wyeast British ale yeast. Any lasting effects on the beer? It's still got bubble activity.

    fermentation cooler

Does anyone use their fermentation cooler to cool their corny kegs as well? I figure a one carboy cooler could probably fit a small co2 tank/regulator/corny keg setup.
