Hey everyone new guy getting ready to brew my first batch of beer next weekend an Octoberfest me and my wife are super excited. I have already gotten some cool tips from a few local people.

i'm actually moving to durham county in august. hows the home brew scene down there?

homebrew scene is pretty good here:

Great LBS: http://brewmasterstore.com/ open 7 days/week, everything you need for beer and whine, also fills CO2 tanks

Durham Breweries:
FullSteam http://www.fullsteam.ag/beer/
BullCity Burger and Brew http://bullcityburgerandbrewery.com/BCB&B/Home.html
Triangle Brewery http://www.trianglebrewery.com/

find your favorite rare beer:
Sams Quickstop http://samsquikshop.com/ (doesn't look like much from outside, but the selection is amazing)

and close by:
Aviator brewery http://www.aviatorbrew.com/
Roth brewing http://www.rothbrewing.com/
Carolina Brewery http://www.carolinabrew.com/
Lonerider http://www.loneriderbeer.com/
Boylan Bridge Brewpub http://www.boylanbridge.com/index.shtml

Yes he is right the scene here is pretty great from what I've seen so far.

We went to bullcitybrew.com
But I stopped at SAM's was impressed with the guys knowledge. They gave me some helpful tips.

cool, I'm starting grad school down there - excited to see what the area has to offer.

I 2nd the "Sams" recommendation.

If you're gonna buy some brew, that's the place to get it in Durham.

Depending on the day you go, the staff can range from eager/helpful, to indifferent. Most of the time I can walk in, and say "What's a good IPA you can recommend?" and walk out with 40-50 buck worth of different beers, LOL.

I'm from Raleigh, NC. Great brews down here. All those mentioned are great. Also, in Raleigh there are Big Boss and Natty Greene's (Natty Greene's is also a restaurant of the same company). In Asheville, there is the Highland Brewing Company, also really good.
